Because then I can use a selection of gearboxes, not just the one from the car.
Also, making a bellhousing to suit a Porsche to Ford/Mazda pattern is a lot harder than using an off the shelf one.
Also, if the car is well balanced beforehand, with a cast iron engine block, replacing that with an all alloy engine will shift the weight towards the back of the car, which will make it gay.

The VW Coupe doesn't have a 6 speed gearbox either, or 3 possible 5 speeds with loads of different ratios off the shelf

Because my budget isn't that of an oil baron, I need a car which costs not a lot to buy, which I can improve.
It's hardly a lot of pointless faffing around either, engine in, gearbox in, turrets in the rear end, bolt stuff on.
Not hard.
The thought of buying an ordinary car and bolting on off the shelf parts doesn't appeal to me either, I've tried that.

Put it this way, was there really any point in you spending 10k on a Skyline when you've replaced everything with better stuff? You'd have been better off buying one without an engine, suspension or brakes for next to nothing really, wouldn't you?
That's what I'm aiming to do. I want a properly specced car which has the initial outlay of a round of drinks.

That's different, I have nothing against finding a good base without a engine.
I just feel deciding on the base of your car dependant on it's inital cost will make it potentially more limited than it should be. Providing you have the cash to upgrade everything immediately to the best it can be, as you say it won't matter, but that's if you can afford to buy Everything straight away, rather than oh well 'I'll buy this for now, and better brakes later, and then that, and this... in that scenerio it may be a dog until you've finally finished it.
Either way mate, good luck with it - I really would like to be able to start a proper solely track car project... I'd like to go RWD, but so far on track I do love FWD it's so forgiving and you can push it over the limit and not have it bite you in the ass
I still stand by the fact a proper specced up and sorted FWD can probably give most RWD cars a good run on track.
I need to get working and make some money

I'm not basing the choice entirely on cost, I just can't afford to go over x amount of money, so the choice is limited.
I'm quite willing to go anywhere between £1 and £1000 though, for example.
It won't be a quick build, whatever I buy, but it will be a proper build.

Obviously I don't want a sheddy thing, but I'd rather not have something I'm not keen to pull apart, I've been there before and it's pointless.

Doesn't matter what condition the engine/suspension etc is in.
As long as the shell is rust free and sturdy, then you ahve a good base for a track car
Old cars are fairly heavy due to the materials used. No aluminium etc. All 10" thick steel But loose weight due to no safty gubbins.

What about an Omega or Carlton?????
Silly i know, but its vauxhall, you know them, parts are cheap, parts are available, RWD, not the usual track car, but the Omega has been used on tracks many times in the thundersaloon series and V8 series. Can be used as a drift toy if thats your thing also.
Once all that interiors out and all the junks out, it'll loose a LOT of weight.
