Well I have only 650cc and its quicker than the 2.0 Turbo VXR (well up to 120 anyway)....

So no, it depends what engine is in what shell. In my case, a bike.....

And talking of 1.0, well a 1.0 motorcycle will do 170mph odd, so no

I couldn't live without a car with acceleration. I find it extremely demoralizing not having the power to over take if I want to. I also find that I drive slow cars a lot faster because they need that much more to keep the speed going

Big engine = power = easy to drive/instant power delivery.
Saying that though, I do enjoy buzzing around in a small engine car around town.

I've only read the first few posts, and my views seem to mirror the rest.

I'm actually quite happy with the 12v. Once it gets to say 60mph, it's fine, will pick up ok to 70mph and even sit at 80mph.

In the rush hour commute and general driving, no matter what car you have, it doesn't matter. So for essentially the same journey, I'm saving money on:

  • fuel
  • insurance
  • tax
  • tyre (because smaller engined cars generally have smaller alloys
  • etc

All I grave more is staying power and the ability to carry loads. My ultimate, realistic near future car would be a 1.7CDTi Corsa C. Got some power, can handle loads (i.e. passengers), will sit nicely at 70mph and hopefully have good fuel economy. Of course running costs will be more (tyres etc) BUT I'll be financially stable to afford it.

So no, speed doesn't matter at the moment. And I don't think it ever truly will. I'm not a born petrol head.

Of course, to a certain extent. Dad drives an E46 M3 and it's amazing.

But lets face it, the roads are getting clogged, speed cameras/threat of bans is ridiculous. I need a car that'll sit at 70mph - 80mph, comfortably.

1.7CDTi should do the job.

Or a 1.8 SRi if fuel economy wasn't an issue

Technically a 1.3

It had the largest displacement yet at 654 cc, for a total of 1308 cc

I tend to do that. I just think to my self, fuck me this is slow, so i tend to keep on acclerating, as if i stop, it takes a life time to get back up to speed unless you are in a stupidly low gear! ( my 1.4 bravo was like that )

But yer more power tends to calm me down alot of the time

Dont let that put you off. Take into considerationg, miles you do, insurance, purchase price and i bet (unless you have a company car or do a large amount of miles) the diesel wont pay!

When I graduate, 1 of 2 things will happen. Either I'll get a job out of London and will need a new car. Or I'll get a job in London, will be using the trains and won't need a new car, as it will be wasted money.

For anywhere local enough to get a decent job, I'll be travelling at least 40 miles every day. I'd imagine the diesel will pay off. Especially the price differences in 1.5 years time

Diesel doesnt save you 'that' much mines around £20 a week cheaper on fuel (I do around 80 miles a day mon-fri) than a petrol equivalent. Tho Diesel is currently around 5p a liter more than petrol. Tax is slightly cheaper, insurance is negliable tho the car is a couple k dearer to buy in the 1st instance. I probably save around £1k a year on fuel, taking the increased purchase cost over a petrol model theres no real saving until possibly the 3rd year of ownership.

I recon my car would be on par cost wise to running a 1L/1.2L Probably munch the tyres quicker but that asides there wont be anything in it. I know what id rather have!

cost of a car really does not matter to me probably go through about 80 quid of petrol a week for a 5mins a day trip to work and then playtime at night. set of tires about every 3 months. but i really dont care at all, it puts a smile on my face nothing else i could waste my money on would do the same unless i started smoking crack or something
