Been driving a 1.4 for a while now and getting returns of 50 mpg, and 90% is sensible driving however down country roads so a lot of revving etc.
Wouldnt go to a diesel, not just yet anyway.

gotta remember a diesel will be quicker through the gears nicer to drive and get that MPG...hence a derv IMO beats a 1.0!

my polo tdi has 150 bhp and 267 ft/lb of torque and gets driven hard, I still manage 48 mpg.
id rather power + economy than just economy.

lol I will get rid of the 12v sooner or later. And of course I would love more power.
BUT, I had panicking thinking "oh shit I need to get a diesel, fuel costs so much and they are better economy" when, I'm getting good returns on the 12v. About 15 months to wait, then it'll be gone

My 1.4 8v used to average a steady 48mpg at 70mph also, which i was rather happy with, but its still not match for a diesel.
My 1.7 CDTI averages 58.5mpg at 60-70 MPH on mixed motorways/A roads (so this includes speeding up from and slowing down for roundabouts) with the aircon on in a car with twice the power and pulling an extra 250kgs.
No match to be fair.
