A lowering spring is designed to be shorter and take different stresses aplied where as a cut spring will be under different strains of which it is not designed for. It was just my opinion and to get the proper thing isnt alot of money so dont see the point.

You know when they make OE coil springs, they make massive long ones and cut them up? Same with aftermarket ones. If its not progressivly wound then its the same all the way through

But the last coil is closer to its neighbour coil than the others and curls inwards........ meaning if you cut that coil off the spring wouldnt sit the same in the cup.

that depends on the car mate. My springs don't do that
If springs are as you described, i agree, dont cut them

im describing corsa b springs lol. if they are flat and like you describe symetrical then yeah that should be ok.

It seems to be one of these things that just sounds stupidly dangerous, but in reality if you do it properly it's no different.
My mate had cut springs on his BM. Thing was so low you had to physically lift it over some speed bumps.
Drifted it/pushed it round bends, never ever had a problem.

Jesus christ, how much do proper springs cost? I can't believe people are stupid/skanky enough to cut springs when they are dirt cheaper anyway. If you can't afford to modify your car properly, then don't bother.

chopped springs aint as bad as everyone says, they have their uses
my back springs are chopped but thats only because i didnt know how low i wanted to go at the back of the car and with no real way of measuring i got the grinder out and carefully cut away until i got the desired height, now ime just waiting for payday on friday to order the correct height knowing for sure it will be enough

I hope you will be informing your insurence comapny that you will be lowering your car/cutting your springs
Would be interesting to see what they say on the matter

i don't think anyone would do it to an Evo or a 'rari, but the majority of people who would do this have very cheap cars anyway. plus it's done regularly on classic stuff where off the shelf kits just aren't available.
Planty - you'd just tell them it was lowered.

well iv done it, cut half a coil off. and its lowered my car an extra! 5mm!!! going to take the rest of the coil off on wednesday. handles fine, springs are retained fine.
All is good

I bought a Golf MK3 that was lowered, but one of the rear coils springs had snapped. So sooner than buying a new set of springs, i got two standard ones, and chopped 2 coils off each and fitted them.
Car drove absolutely fine and had NO problems. Still going strong now three years on.
People who say 'your a fool' etc etc have just read peoples opionins on forums and not actually done it.

my thoughts exactly, this thread i think has got to the bottom of that. People who call you a fool have no reason apart from they have seen someone else call a 'cutter' a fool. 5mm isnt too noticable atm but im thinking -75mm all together should look good.

tbh my brother has always had chopped springs on his corsa and between us we ahve had bout 13 all have had no probs what we done was chop them spray them red job done handled really well

The way im doing it on my mk1 astra is cutting them to get the height then get some made up to the correct poundage and the height i want from coilsprings.co.uk
