Astra GSi turbo

Celica GT4
Sapphire cosworth
Mint S2 RS turbo
Ford Racing puma
Pontiac Transam 6.6 V8
Civic type R
E36 M3
Audi S3
And thats just off the top of my head, could probably loads more still if i trawled PH classifieds.
The point im making is where to draw the line between excessive spending and just a general hobby.
Now say if you spent £12k building a road going corsa LET that you couldnt use to its full potential and didnt dare tracking incase you binned it, but your mate spent 3k building a track XE that he used on trackdays and wasnt too bothered if he smacked it - who would you say has more fun in their car?
Im not preaching here, i dont give a toss who wastes their money on what - just giving my opinion on a question the OP asked.

If ti didnt go on the car it would get wasted on BOOZE DRUGS and FOOD!!!
Atleast if u you spend it on what you enjoy then youve got something there infront of you for your money.
We could ask the same of a girl, why own 50 pairs of SHOES!!! haha

agreed!...
this boils down the saying that's old...and yet will go on for probably ever (although the government are trying to stop it all)...
"Each to their Own!"
Its what defines us as individuals, and why i wont be drawn into the 'sheep' category.

Its a way of life. To me spending money on a car and parts for cars is better than going out fri and sat every weekend spunking money away, at least spending it on a car you can get some of it back!
For me its a hobby, something to do. I also like to look out the window or whatever and think, thats mine I made it look like that and there's not another like that

Dizzy the problem with what you are saying is like these people had 5k infront of them and decided to spend it on a Corsa. It's 5k over a period of time, maybe 3 years for all you know which isn't much really.
I'm sure if people had 5k infront of them they wouldn't spend it on a Corsa they'd buy a car good out the box so I think your opinion is completely flawed.

However i spent it over the space of 3 or 4 years a bit at a time
in hindsight if i hadnt spent anything and saved up i could have bought a better car etc etc
20k is a waste no matter how u look at it! You cant use learning mechanics as an excuse either as i went to college and did that and it cost me fuck all! Id cry if i worked out i spent 20k on a corsa, thats a house deposit or a porsche 911.

Some people get more enjoyment out of the building rather than the driving.

He simply doesn't understand.
And he's always flawed.
Sure, would love to have had a £20k car at 18, plus had the insurance paid. That put me in Escort Cosworth territory for a first car.....
YEah, if I had rich parents who paid for it all, and not me earning a normal wage and paying out of my own pocket.
Sorry, but anyone who doesn't get it never will. When there's 10+ of you spending £15k+ on a modifying a car, going to all the shows, going over each others houses, going on on the razz, arranging meets and events, where we all really got on, is priceless.
Some people are very materialistic though as we know. If its not got the designer badge, or the best of the best, its not worthy........
Anyway, who says its a waste? I spent £20k, Donna spent a LOT more, yet now (because i've waasted my money and my life), I now have a £200k house, an Astra VXR, a Bandit, and a Benelli, and my house fully kitted with toys, computers, laptops, flastcreens, leather blah blah blah.
Indeed, I wasted my youth.
PS, I was raised in a council estate, and paid for everything myself. So

£15 a month gym membership. I dont pay for gear and if i do id spend no more than £120 on a cycle.
My money was spent on an RS250 track bike mainly. I bought a full 250 challenge spec bike with a stan stephens motor from work with a good spares package for £800 as it needed a new gearbox. £50 later it was ready to roll and i did trackdays for just over a year on it before selling it for £2500.
With that money i bought an XR2i for my first car and a years insurance and put the rest away, soon upgrading to a corsa gsi which i then spent about £500 on suspension brakes and wheels. Then i decided i wanted a Corsa GSi V6 so that went away to make way for a half finished car that cost me £1400 plus another 600 to finish it, It was 210bhp, 150mph capable and it cost me 2 grand so i had plenty of fun in it for not a lot of money.
Then i lost my licence last year and have only just recently got it back, But rather than spunk more money on a car thats going to cost me a fortune and keep me living at home for another 5 years ive put all the money ive saved into trying to set up on my own.
I had fun, plenty of fun infact and the difference is that i didnt need to spend a years wages to do so. The only time i ever lost money was on my first GSi after wasting it on upgrades i didnt really need so that taught me a valuable lesson, same with the V6 i only got £1400 back for it.

I splat money on mine as i can now afford to, i love my cars, its my hobby its my pride and joy. I'd rather spend money on my car than piss it up against a wall. It gives me a massive smile everytime it comes on boost.
And the best reason is the look on the scooby drivers face this morning was Priceless

I do look at it and regret getting into debt over it etc but over all i got a lot of mechanical knowledge out of it and made good mates along the way.
One valuable thing did come out of it....once you have a dead horse flog it asap dont keep fixing it

I said it was to see the looks on peoples faces when a Corsa comes tearing past but is that really worth all the money we spend?
All u have to say to her is "no offence, but why spend all that money on make up and still look dog ugly "

Should have asked her why she spends so much money on make up, hair things, dresses etc, I would rather spend alot of money on something I love than spend loads of money on something that is only going to last a night out.
Edit: should have read a few posts up before posting a reply
