Why? Golfs are shit.

And so are Audi's and BMW's

Infact anything non Vauxhall

Vauxhall are the best at making cheap, fast cars though. They still do it today with the corsa VXR, astra VXR and the VXR8.

Far Far cheaper than any german rival and they perform as well as, if not better than the competition.

That is the point though isn't it.

This marketing campaign by VW is just rubbish, you have some lads tuning what looks like a 306, ok it looks like a sack of shit but if its a 306 GTi-6 then it's going to be faster than the Mk3 Golf GTi of the time and even the VR6 and handling cannot be compared.

Then you have someone driving a rival to a Golf around a track, now lets say thats an Astra VXR, and compared with the Golf GTi which is slow and no where near worth the extra premium compared with the Astra.

The new Mk6 Golf isn't as good to drive as a Corsa VXR, it felt better screwed together but to pay 25k for one is just madness.

Late reply to AndyKent. A lot of people couldn't give a shit if you can 'easily tune' a car too.

Obviously, but Olly is usually making the comparison against his Astra, so I stuck with it.

Yes and that limp wristed, overweight, underpowered spinout king is really in the same league as a VXR8?

the only people that come close to vauxhall are ford, but they lost their way a while ago. Whilst BMW and audi make some good cars... you pay silly silly money for them. a VXR8 is half the price of an M3 and in terms of spec and performance, they arent all that dissimilar.

Again, a corsa VXR is about 10 grand cheaper than a golf GTi, yet in terms of spec and performance they are the same...

I wasn't comparing anything with my Astra?

I was talking from experience of every Mk of Golf to date.

The Mk6 felt the best from what I've driven but it's still a long way off being a decent drivers car.

As a 'drivers car' I would definately have a VXR over a GTi, but 95% of buyers don't want a drivers car. They want something to go to Tescos, get to work in comfort or whatever. All this drivers car stuff suddenly becomes irrelevant, especially when most days I can't even get to work at the national speed limit due to all the fuckwits travelling at 40mph

GTi is the comparable to the VXR. 4pot turbo versus 4pot turbo.

R32 is mostly for the noise, not performance.
