I think Paul is right, there are stupid nobs out there willing to pay money for stupid things. Just look at ring tones and the multi-billion dollar industry therein.

Just a case of wasting some time trying to hit a niche but the economies of scale are there. The 50ps add up as proven by the other guy.

I also know what IP stands for and see its relevance in this context.

One thing I did think about though, be careful rehashing code from your employer. I would imagine your contract includes a clause which makes everything you make for them while you're on their payroll property of them? I know I can't re-sell anything I prepare for use in work.

Yeah that is true ian... Technically it would have to be different code, as iphone is a completely different development platform / coding language...

But the ideas of what the software do / the functionality etc, could be the same.

Depends what they own. They may lay claim to IP?

That's the real IP problem. You can't go using your companies coding or concepts in your own projects.

Example. There are many pedometer apps for the iPhone. I could make my own and I wouldn't be breaching anyone's IP. However, I work for a company who make fitness products. There's already a conflict of interest there. However, let's say they make a pedometer app for an Android phone. If I was to port that software to iPhone there would be a problem because I would be using the intellectual property of my employer.

Another case. Say I make the same piece of software again, but another developer think that I've stolen their idea because my application does the same thing, or there are similarities in the interface. The app is not patentable because it isn't a new idea as such - it's simply an implementation of existing technologies. The only thing the person contesting has to go on is copyright. They would have to go through the courts process to prove that I have copied their work and therefore sue me; or to say that the similarities are too great and try to get an injunction against me selling this product because it is damaging to them.

I do know what IP means, but in the context Alex was using it, and especially in the example he tried to give, he definitely meant USP.

There's a company called MEDL mobile who will develop apps for people usually on a 50/50 split of the profit basis, they've got a few apps out, some good, some pointless and some a bit crap, but they will develop for you Nismo.

That's a cool concept that MEDL Thing... clever way of doing it... basically gathering people's ideas, and when it finds one they like (original / fun / mass appeal etc) they make it and share the profit...

However, I doubt they'll make 'anything' for you like you are suggesting - rather only if they see it as being a succesful product. So for example if you want a app making for your company that does a certain functionality... I can't see MEDL being the people to make it, as there will be no gain for them.
