my thing about these engines is, unless you are racing in a class, or competing in a class. it costs more to tune them compared to putting a bigger engine in. therefore for power and stuff for your average road car, fit a bigger engine. its relatively cheap these days and is rediculously easy to do.

definitely not the c16? as when i sold mine i had to get a code that was stamped into the head checked as the fella was only intersted in a certain year of 1600 16v as it was better.

not to tune though to the standards of a larger cc engine. i was just thinking of the thread title. its cheaper to fit a bigger engine than tune a 1400 up etc.

already started polhbushing it next step is bilsteins and a rear arb thn want to start on engine.. wanted to checkout the 1400s potential and for advice/experiences as id seen them at events before rather than going xe and thought it would make an interesting fast road car rather than the usual "red tops"

red tops as people call them are common for many reasons however.

As has been mentioned the c16 head is a far better design. Much larger ports...
C16

X16/14

Great little engines. I love them
My x16 made 160bhp with just tb's and good mapping

not true linch
top head is a X16XEL
the c16 and x14/16xe have shape clover leaf port shape but you need to have heads side by side as the c16xe is quite a few mm larger

Nope, Throttle bodies and management and evin had standard exhaust manifold. Oh and ARP bolts for the 8200k limit.
Edited the image, I had the wrong one copyd and pasted
A XEL head looks even better when you mention it philip.

What manifolds you after? I can get these but not billet cast like the one in the picture (thats mine) I can get a mate of mine to make a copy of it out of aluminium.

lad on turbosport is looking at building an all steel small block for his escort, but i need to find out if bowyer can do them or who can do an inlet manifold to suit the XEL head not the c/x14,16 heads if that makes sense.

inlet manifold, tbs arent a problem, just the actual inlet to bolt to the head.
