GOOD FOR TOWING (my old mans previous Disco)

surely there were total arse to tow cos u have put all the weight over the rear of trailer to will snake like mad! i found posistioning of car makes huge difference to how things tow, on our trailer some cars travel really nice and others are ok, i remember years back when we put vx220 on, all weight was near the back and we were struggling to get over 50! was happy my dad was driving! lol

i picked up another vx220 last year with a mate, we put it on backwards so weight was over front of trailer and happly doing 70 towing it with little van! he then told me that he was towing his tvr with our trailer doing 80 easy with the little van! shocking!!!!

the van towed things far beta then our 4litre keep cherokee, was strange!

My dad has one for the same reason. They Sorrento has won the caravan club tow car of the year in 06, 07, and 08 in its class (awd over 1800kg) and was the overall winner for 06 as well as having various other towing awards from other organisations. The only thing that lets them down for me is the interior, they have all the modern comforts but the plastics and leather feel a little cheap though they are very robust.

Iaz - he cars were put on that way as they could not be turned around to reverse them on , or i would n ormaylly load a trailer with weight in middle/more towards the drawbar.

I wouldn't be buying a Touraeg if it was my money. So unreliable and slow. They eat diffs and turbo's pretty often!

The car will be needed for towing, but is also our daily driver as well.

Adam, have you ever considered something like a Transit Beaver tail as opposed to a tow vehicle and trailer?

I've suggested it a few times...I wouldnt mind a recovery truck and buy another car for a daily runaround, but parking, double road tax, double insurance etc makes it a bit of a pain

You could opt for a nice late one with as short a bed as poss but a crew cab. You could sort of use it as a car Fee.

It wouldn't have to be some horrid, huge, manky ex AA wagon.

A decent Transit can be a very pleasant drive.

And NOT pikey Jimbo.

You would get two vehicles if one vehicle was too much of a compromise.

Thing is, a Disco or RR does both jobs perfectly, so the compromise is actually the wise approach.

I'd rather a car that can tow, can do the shopping, can go out in. Feck leaving a transit around.

535TDi twinturbo would be good but it just not heavy enough

My shortlist (just cars, not ones we've looked at)

07 RR Sport HSE TDV6 - 33k miles, £24.8k... wheels are a bit ghey but not overly fussed

06 RR Vogue TDV6 - 26k miles, fully loaded - £25k

05 BMW 535TD Touring - 77k miles, heaps of toys - £15k just unsure on its weight (even when its rated to tow 2tons)

and a wildcard

03 Cayenne S 4.5 V8 - £16k

See if you can get a drive in the bmw before you make your mind up and get a 4x4.
The drive and performance of the twin turbo diesel engines in them is unreal even more so when remapped. That for me would sway the vote as its such a better everyday car but you've got to be realistic about the how much towing you are actually wanting to do.
