Actually I can think of at least five engines which could be in there, but the one that is, isn't one of them.

most of the irish are running JRE engines from 2.0 up to 2.4 Xe's and depending on how JRE are getting on, some may even be starting to use 2.5ltr XE's. to be fair though the irish have made prices of the escorts go up + there history in motorsport with vaternan, mikkola, etc make them wanted at any cost really.

Surely you can't be thinking of the pre-cross and the two lardy sixes?

Actually it's 9.

Crossflow.*

Pinto* (with or without the Warrior Twin cam head option).

BDA/G/T.

YBD.

Lotus Twin Cam.

That mad quad cam V6 thing that was in the similarly mad Escort that Jackie Stewart drove.

Sierra/Granada 2 litre Twin Cam unit.

That barmy new 2.3 litre Mountune Zetec thing, preferably with the fake BDA cam cover.

And finally, my own personal preference, a nice DFV in road trim.

You could also stick a Capri/Granada Cologne/Essex lump in, or a Cosworth Granada V6 if six cylinders is your preference and especially if one is on a budget.

I will also allow the application of Ford V8 and Rover V8 units for those that prefer the Stock Car/Pro Street/Hot rod approach.

* Incidentally and as a matter of much interest to me at least, you can now buy alloy heads for both of these and an alloy block for the Kent unit (there may also be one available for the Pinto too), yes, that's right, if money's no object, you can no build an all alloy, 2.3L Crossflow!

That was a Cosworth GAA I believe, Essex based, 470bhp from 3.4 litres, as found in the RS3100 Capris.

This is the very same engine but in a breadvan - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QY5_T59MceY

My Sapphire went like the absolute clappers, revved like a nutter, never drank or burnt a drop of oil or coolant and returned amazing MPG.

I can't help but imagine what even more fun that very engine would have been, were it transplanted into a budget MK II, perhaps a 4 door like Project Goldmember.
