well put it this way i've done 27thousand miles in just over a year. so maybe a second diesel car will be better.

If thats that case then just buy a diesel as the only car & get an even better one.............infact when I was doing 30k a year thats exactly what I did, sold my petrol car & got a diesel.

Depends on your plans for the Saxo. If you've already put 27k on it then its probably high mileage already? In which case you're not really increasing its value or improving its condition by getting the second car.
Shop around for a multi-car policy or front it via a parent but bear in mind the issues that this will present you with if you need to claim, particularly if you front the commuting car and crash it and the owner is nowhere to be seen.
You can't commute in a borrowed car on a long term basis.

yea its highish now. But i did want to keep it and do some bits with it, but thinking about it, i might just get somthing else then sell the saxo. its just something i'm thinking about at the minute.

Or take the Saxo off the road and sort it out rather than run them both. In reality you'll just end up not using it and it just becomes an expense for no reason. The thing that most surprised me about running multiple cars is how easy it is to neglect the ones you don't need at that precise time.

yeah, It was just a thought at the minute. ill have a think about it and see what happens. just the thing thats bothering me is if it breaks down im stuck.

If you're worried about breaking down you would be better with one good car rather than two older ones and two sets of running costs.

Currently got the second car dilemma with my 106 GTi.
Have no use for it at all other than the fact that I like driving it, more than likely going to be selling it soon as its neither not worth keeping long term and I have no desire to mod or track it or anything.
Still be gutted to see it go though

years ago when I first bought a 2nd car my old corsa didnt get any use at all.
I bought the Supra and intended to keep my silver corsa as I'd had it for a few years and spent a fair bit on it. In reality it just say there on the drive getting rusty.
When I blew the supra up I bought a legendary £100 panda.
Buying a second car JUST INCASE THE FIRST BREAKS DOWN is complete nonsense. Bus, Taxi, Train, Walk!

i dont sew the point in second cars either.
however ill be buying a runabout for a second car while i do the conversion on the corsa, but then the corsa will be used hard every day

I drive a mass produced Mazda but doesn't mean I want it run into the ground and rack up the mileage. Using it for 30k miles a year is not what I bought the car for so maybe that's what this guy is not wanting to do either.
Giving a quick breakdown of the reason having a cheaper 2nd car is better:
Fuel to work in the car - £15
Fuel to work in the van - £7-8
Car tyres - £110 each and about 5-6k miles life
Van tyres - £40 each and 20k miles life
Servicing the car - £250-£300
Servicing the van - £100
Just a small summary of prices there, I can park the van where I want without worrying about it and the car stays safely tucked up for when I fancy something fun to drive or taking someone out etc. It makes the car more fun when it does come to driving it tbh, if you drive a car everyday it gets so dull and boring which is what my Fiesta was starting to become despite being a very fun car.
Just my 2 pence.

i have 2 cars. There is a lot of point in it for me. I dont give a fuck if you say im only saving putting miles on just a corsa. You try afford to drive my corsa every day? 2nd car for the absolute win. There is nothing illegal in being a named driver on a car and using it. Its your money. Do whatever you want.

While the VXR isn't a prestige or classic car it is my pride and joy. I want to keep it that way.
I run around in a crap Escort that I don't worry what happens to it when it's parked up etc, and as said repairs are cheap

The economy side of things aren't an issue to me. I travelled up to Leeds to visit a mate in my Metro. Cost around £25 in fuel. I went up in the Corsa few months later and it cost the same. Honestly. For me, its the convienience of being able to jump in an old car thats cumfy and drive it anywhere and leave it anywhere. Also building my Corsa is a lot less stressful knowing that I don't need to get parts and finish it in record time and I can leave it on stands or in pieces as I don't rely on it for commuting. Its all about the satisfaction of being able to spend time doing work and having something nice to drive when its sunny

thegsi sums it up perfectly.
I don't use the VXR during the week and I prefer it that way, if I drove it in traffic I would grow bored and tired of being in it.
But having it there for those beautiful days and road trips is so awesome

O and about the insurance thing, if you get insurance in your mum/dads name and your the one using it all the time then thats illegal, as you have told the insurers that your mum/dad is the main driver when infact you are

we will both be named drivers, both on the policy thats whats its there for. ill tell them ill be using it to and from work aswell. its costing loads in petrol and the roads to work are shite. ill get a second car, and if i dont use the saxo ill sell it. but i will probs keep it as its soemthing fun to drive now and agen.
