http://www.lottery.co.uk/news/consecutive-numbers.asp

Two sets of three consecutive numbers appeared when the Lotto draw was held on Saturday 23 January, 2008. The lottery results were 24, 25, 26, 38, 39, 40, and anyone who makes a habit of entering consecutive sequences would have been encouraged by these numbers even if they didn’t happen to win.

The odds of a consecutive sequence is slimmer than a non-consecutive set purely because three are less consecutive sequences in the data set.

The actual odds of any single 6 number set is the same as any other 6 number set, ie.

1,2,3,4,5,6 is the same as 6,17,22,45,47,48

Not sure of the exact maths as I don't know how many balls there are but with the number n on b balls it's modelled by

1 in (n x n-1 x n-2 .. n-b-1)

..which works for either combo.

You're more likely to see a "random" set, when in fact any combination is equally likely. Just you don't recognise it as such.
