Arrange a test drive and ask to see the documents, at the best chance slip the v5 into your pocket then get the plate put onto retension. He may have not even sent the V5 off if hes selling it this quickly so it might still be in your name!

I've still got the main part of the V5 but it obviously has his details in the new keeper section.

I don't think the guy would be daft enough to leave it where it could be stolen without him noticing in the first place though.

This makes it a completely different story....

Legally he cannot sell the car and the V5 is still in your name. You may need to get a fresh one with the new keeper slip on it, just fill out for a duplicate, go to an MOT station and get a duplicate MOT when the V5 comes back. Then all you need is the tax disc serial unless it is due to runout soon in which case you shouldnt need it as you would be getting a new disc at the same time.

Technically it still belongs to the DVLA, you just pay for the right to use it, they can claim it back at any point if they want to.

still having the v5 means its still your car

Threaten him with the fact your not gona send it away unless he co-operates with the plate transfer

OR just go ahead and change it over anyways

But he has the new keeper part.Easy enough to nip down the P.O and grab a form and apply for the V5 free of charge.

Him having the V5 does not mean he owns the car. The new owner simply has to fill in a form to request a new one.

Sorry to be brutally honest mate but you have lost the plate, remember for the future to put it on retention.

My post was in regard to the new owner, not the seller.

New owner can apply for the V5 seeing as he has the new keeper part.
