Astra 1.9 CDTI SRI 150ps with tuning box / remap should see it to 190bhp and still return 40-45 mpg
How much are they going for? I thought a sport hatch 1.9 cdti would still be going for more than £5.5k? They are ok but still a bit plasticy.
Yea thats the problem, think they are still going for 7/8k for a average 2nd hand one...

I'd fuck off comfort and toys and buy a Westfield.

Or an MK Indy, ST Locoblade or any other kit car with a bike engine

Just really nice auto slush boxes nothing compared to what people percieve auto boxes to be like. Also you will pay about £700 more a decent auto nothing quite like a luxury auto box Also if the step boxes can be hooked up to SMG padddles if you felt flush but not really worth it

I spent ages avoiding 330 autos when I was looking purely because I had a e39 540 auto previously and always wished it was a manual. I'm not saying there was anything significantly wrong with the auto, I just wanted a manual. In the end I didn't get one at all. I may be back looking again though and possibly consider an auto..so the question is: is the e46 auto box improved or different from the e39 auto to encourage that choice or is it just preference in a lazy cruiser Fad?

Unless there are different types of autos, the 330ci auto I drove was one of the worst gearboxes of any car I've ever driven.

You are kidding?
BMW are renowned for making the best auto gearboxes around.

I was in the same boat (anywhere from £5k-£6k). I looked at Cupra R's and very nearly bought one but the cheapest insurance I could find was £2,100 TPFT and I just can't justify that.
Ended up with a Fabia vRS:

I don't normally like the idea of buying modified cars/bikes but this made sense, it has the same coilovers/exhaust as I was gunna get anyway as well as other bits like ARB's, FMIC and so on which add up pretty rapidly. For example I got £3k worth of receipts in the last 6 months and for £5,000 I can't complain especially since it just had it's major service.
I insured it for £550 and averaged 43mpg in my first tank and that wasn't exactly slow driving either. It makes a lot of sense to be honest but of course people flame them because they're a diesel and/or a Skoda. Meh.
It's got a few things I dislike about it such as fake carbon vRS badges to replace the OEM ones. Replacing those cost £16 per badge and there was the small case of him silicone both numberplates to the car. Other than that though I'm happy with it and as I said I would have done a lot of those mods regardless so I just see it as money saved that I can spend elsewhere on the car.
Plans:
Seats retrimmed in leather by Seat Sugeons for around £800. I hate the white seats and from what I've seen the retrimmed seats look seriously cool.
PD150 Turbo Dynamics Hybrid with Stage 2 map (around 220bhp)
Few subtle changes like Cupra R front splitter, HID's, putting a standard front bumper back on as the FMIC is pretty small (in terms of height) and there's enough air flow on the standard venting, not sure why he decided to cut the bumper like that.
I'll probably get a set of 17" Octavia vRS wheels too as I think they're smart. It should end up looking like this:

Nup, I'd hate to drive around in it.
If I was 50 and couldn't deal with the clutch any more then possibly, still wouldn't have that one though.
I couldn't find a decent vRS for 5.5k when I was looking recently, were all older high milers.

John I dont doubt the manual is better in everything other than huge luxury saloons and 4x4s I'm a manual through and through. I don't like the lack of control you have over the engine/car. All slow to react in a performance way too.
My comment was if you have to have an auto then BMW do it best. Trust me I've driven the others and it's lightyears ahead

I found quite a few when I was looking middle of August? Ended up buying mine for £6k I admit, but that was on a 56 plate with 61k on it, from a dealer with a years warranty and 12 months MOT.
