Freelander are TD4, no such thing as TD3 and TD5 is the Disco engine.
They're fairly capable particularly if you don't ask too much of it. Certainly snow and the odd bit of mud won't trouble either a Freelander or a Disco, regardless of whether you prep it for that.

an L200 / Navara is shite as a daily in my opinion
We had an 08 Navara Outlaw for 2years. OK car, but a bit commercial.
Defender 90 has the image and ability.... but yes... wont be that nice as a daily
The only 4x4's that will be are the expensive ones

Discos are very capable off road. i had a TDi 300 and it never let me down and tbf i gave it hell and rough treatment every day. BUT it is by far the least economical vehicle i have owned. Lucky to see 20MPg with careful driving, this is due to its excessive weight and constant 4WD.

Having owned both I don't know where the Freelander hatred comes from. Viscous diff is an expense and the petrol engines are generally not very good but other than that I would have another one.
My major reason to get a Disco over a Free was the towing weight and the fact that Disco of mine was fairly cheap, couldn't even find a Freelander for that money that wasn't a non-runner.

... yes but lets not kid on where this 4x4 will spend 99% of its time....
On road!
Rangie, X5, Q7, Cayenne
Pimpin
You're TD5 is fucked if you cant get 20MPG. We see about 23 just round town all the time, 30+ at 70 on motorways.... 25 to 27mpg towing about 2tons
2.7 TDV6 in RRS (same engine isnt it )
EDIT - just noticed TDi300

I used to just laugh at the MPG I got with my old V8 Rangie.... never mind when I was towing

Range engine is different plus he's talking about a 300 which is the 95-98 shape, not quite as efficient as the newer stuff.

The mrs and I thought about the new shape disco the other day instead of a cayenne.
My mates parents have one and it's an awesome bit of kit. Not that it will see much off roading they have loads of land so it's put to good use

Yup... we considered a newish Disco when we were looking but the Range Rover was just a bit less commercial'ish if you know what I mean.
Last time it snowed i just aim for the biggest hills and worst snow.... means less traffic and lets you play with the different mods like hill desent etc

How much are the newish Disco's???
I could just get a decent 4x4 & then save for a summer car.

Depends what term newish. Few years old is still 25/30 for a nice one.
Older 3 which is still newish in terms of body shape is 12/15

£12k for a 3 is reasonable.
I find £7/8k for a 2 to be somewhat ridiculous. £5k for a 2004 ES or Metropolis perhaps but people are asking thousands for old lower spec stuff, too much.
OSF tyre is on wrong on that car, not sure if that is worthy of suspicion regarding how well it's been looked after.

Yeah it seems reasonable for a 2005!! Theres some similar ones for 20k, same year. Are prices just all over the place or what??
Too much for the other one? You got a bargain on yours right enough!! I'll keep looking!!
Tyres on wrong in what way?

It's cheap because it's an S so no leather/nav. The ones with spec do generally make a lot more.

Do you really need a 4x4 or is it just because its snowy now.
We only get a couple of weeks a year where we get snow and out of those 2 weeks there are minor occasions when you cant use an ordinary car.

To do it properly will cost a lot more than 20k though
Or look for a 5k Landie Defender 90, and have 15k for a 'scabby' 996 C2 (:S) or an M3, or Elise.... maybe a nice Evo 8+
This is exactly what I was looking at, Range Rover instead of Cayenne though.
After lots of trawling through ads and visits to dealers, I came up with the conclusion that I won't ever use them enough to justify buying 2 cars to satisfy my problem.
I now have an Evo IX with 400/400 bhp/torque.
4WD with plenty of power to chase and scare 911's
Its great fun

Its the recent snow thats got me looking at them but like I said earlier I want a vehicle I do stuff in. Something I can throw some gear in, go away to somewhere like the Cairngorm's, bit of what I fancy, sleep in it if I require drive it off road, got it dirty as a pig, come back, leave it outside the pub & not have to worry about it!!
I can have 2 awesome in different way cars instead of one that i'm not totally happy with. I dont regret buying the FRS but its not what I want now. Had the experience....move it on!

Just don't underestimate the cost of running two cars, particularly if they're both in high tax brackets and love fuel.
