First thing you should get is 3G watchdog, put in when your data month starts and how much you get and it will monitor how much you've used. Can set it up to give alerts when you reach certain percentages
In 14 days though I've used 32mb as it's left constantly on but I do pretty much everything over wifi.

Vodafone: from 4th January 2011, UK VAT increases to 20%. Some of our prices are changing, find out more at vodafone.co.uk/yourbill
Surely they can't bill me more, I agreed to 24 months at £40 so changing it 4 months in is surely illegal.

You won't have agreed to that though. If you read the contract you'll have agreed to a price of £34.04 a month +VAT
Does the 85p difference really matter that much anyway?

If you're only 4 months in to your contract then you should have known VAT was going up.

Then that's your fault, not like it's breaking news. It was announced at least 8 months ago

In all fairness I didn't know it was a mere 85p until it was said in here. I was just saying.

It cost me £54.52 to put a tank of fuel into the rover the day before yesterday.
I remember the days of a tank being a hell of a lot less than that.

Petrol has been going up at the rate of a penny a week for a while now, people don't seem to notice that unleaded is at an all time high and diesel is nearly 130p again
