From the ones you've suggested I'd say VXR or M3 (not a big fan of the ST )....

I would have suggested something Jap along the lines of Evo/Scoob Sti/ Supra although I think you've made your mind up on Jap cars (I still think you should drive one though..)

Not true.

My mates Mk5 Astravan CDTi shat its pants @ 23k.Only had a Tuning box fitted so not highly tuned.Dosn't go smashing through the gears etc either.

Kano on here, his Mk5 CDTi SRi hatch was around the same miles when it let go.

I would love to own a VXR,but if i could afford the running costs etc,i would pick an E46 M3 anyday of the week.

The noise and road presence would do it for me.

Laguna Seca Blue or Phoenix Yellow.

Have driven an Evo 4 and 5 and an impreza.

Hate the build quality and 'cheap' feel.

They may go like fuck and handle brilliantly but thats not what im looking for any more tbh.

I may keep my 328 and strip it and track it also.

My mate has just bought a Seca one so thats out of the picture. I wasn't aware that the CDTI's shared the same box either, thats interesting.

So your saying that all of those boxes that have gone tits up (and theres a lot) are all done by driver error. Your on another planet if you think that pal. Remember all of those boxes ain't just from the Vxr. The cdti has the same one and there's been plenty of failures on them. At the end of the day it's your money. I will never buy a Vxr again. Kano on here had a whole host of problems with his. Almost everyone of them happened to mine. I don't care what anyone says when every owner posts up the same very expensive failure you'd be a tool not to sit up and take notice and just use the lame excuse that every one couldn't drive properly.

I wasnt implying that that comment towards you before you take any more offence to it.

What i meant is that if you buy a car that has been tuned and misstreated its more likely to have a gearbox failure. If i buy one and tune it myself and drive it how i want to drive it, its no-one elses fault but mine if it does fail.

Also have these known cdti's been owned from new or have they been owned by a firm or hire company where they are going to get pure abuse every minute of its life?

A gearbox shouldn't let go at less than 30k regardless of how much abuse its had.

Look at the F16/F20/F28 etc. Most will be well over 100k with constant abuse and trackdays etc under there belt and still going strong.

Its certainly not driver error with the M32.

I wouldn't not pick the VXR due to it,but i would make sure it still has manufacturers warranty left or an aftermarket warranty that would cover it.

For once I totally agree with corsa-sport21. Out of all the performance cars I've owned the astra was the lowest mileage apart from the Evo which was nearly the exact same and I never had a single failure on any of them. I'm just trying to give a bit of advice buddy, it annoys me when people say it's down to driver error lol.

Actually had it confirmed by a Vx mechanic that the key issue with the M32 box is the fact the torque rating (320NM) is so close to the output torque of the Z20LEH (and the diesel) at the flywheel. If you look at the various fiats/alfas/etc which run the M32 they have no trouble what so ever 'cus they run at lower torque.

And for that reason i'd stay clear of a VXR

I wouldn't say its a reason not to get one, you just have to factor in that there's a chance it can happen and either put money away incase you have a big repair or take out a waranty

Yes because only people that drive Astra's with the M32 box don't use the clutch properly.

Black, full leather, 18's, no mods.

No pics yet, well im fully aware of the gearbox potential failure, and as said its no-one elses fault if it fails but mine.

It wasnt going to stop me buying a the car though, Just like the ZLET having shit turbos never stopped anyone buying one. 106 GTi Geabox........ the list goes on.

The head mechanic at my local Vx dealer. Think tbh no one will ever know for definite if there is or isn't a real issue.
