Over a 44 litre tank the difference between diesel and petrol would be about £3.

i think most people don't really understand a diesel nor work out the true costs, people just buy any old diesel because they think its a way to beat the system and think its cheap motoring

I miss my diesel a bit. The Mini is more fun when you are in that kind of mood but for just driving to and from work generally the torque of the diesel makes it a better every day car. I'd have another. Ideally I'd have a diesel for my main car and the Mini in the garage for occasional use and to keep it special.

Had a diesel octavia VRS did 20k in 9 months broke down 4 times thanks to the DPF filters and only got 38mpg around town, got a petrol Ibiza which is quicker sounds better cheaper tax and does 36mpg around town and does over 40 on a run.
i would defo have a diesel again but only if i was doing motorway work these DPF filters are shit in new cars.

If you think because you buy a diesel you instantly save yourself a load of money you're kidding yourself.
They cost more to buy and more to fill up so unless you're doing 10,000+ miles a year the difference is marginal.
Most modern diesels are also still expensive to insure, Mk5 Golf GT Tdi is insurance group 16 and the petrol GTi is 17. The difference in tax is also less than £100.

I think it just depends on what type mod driving you do, if your just going around town you might as well have a petrol, but if your mainly doing motorway journeys it would be better to have a diesel.
I sort of wished I hash bought a diesel as I have been going back home about once a week, although its only 100miles round trip, its about 10quid difference in fuel, whereas before I was barely doing any miles and a petrol would of been fine

On board computer mpg pictures don't mean much.
Did he reset it while driving along the motorway?
It'll also most likely be at least 10% out, probably more.
What's his average over a few hundred or a couple of thousand miles.
They cost more to buy and also probably sell for more, takes that bit if it out of the equation.

I probably spend about £50 a month more on fuel than I did when I had a diesel. I only used to fill my diesel up twice a month, that's 1,000 miles of motoring compared to the Mini I would need to fill it up nearly 3 times to do that distance. Same size fuel tank too.

if your diesel is slow AND gets shit mpg, theres something wrong with it seriously!
i want to know why BMW havent yet made a mini cooper SD. that would be interesting. althought i dont like the cooper S's anyway.
Cooper SD? you know they make a Cooper D?
I think he means make a powerfull/sport diesel like the GT TDI 170 golfs for example.

Having power is safer, fact.

in the 90's this was the case as diesels were sluggish, smokey. smelly, and very difficult to drive with heavy clutches etc.
things have come a long way now mate. i mean look at the Aston martin racer diesel version, and the audi R8 diesel and le mans car , etc.
seat leon FR did very well (i think they won?) the BTCC championship last year and that was racing against other 2ltr petrols.

What are the other reasons?
torque, pulling power (as in heavy loads), engines lasting a lot longer, less maintenance, easily remappable to suit your style of driving, etc etc

My friend's LCR:
i cant see the picture, work wont allow it, but i imagine its your MFD showing average of 50mpg.
i can quite easily drive a mile down the road in neutral and have 200 mpg showing on my MFD. this doesnt proove nothing.

those of your who drive work vans and compare these diesels to your sporty petrol hatch, you really are daft.
compare like for like here please.
ie. golf mk4 1.8T (150) VS golf mk4 1.9 GT TDi (150)
i know which one i would have. and ive had both before.

oh ffs
My mate sits behind lorries on the M25 trying to achieve the best mpg to compete with his gf's Ibiza Cupra TDI (which gets about 60+mpg )
If you don't believe it then that's up to you

Yes John, I know all this.
It's still good for an old 1.8T pushing 225ps.
I never rely on my trip and always use my receipt and the miles covered. I average around 35mpg on the car and 38mpg on the shitty diesel
