I love the construction industry for this reason.

Surveyors hate building surveyors.
Building surveyors hate surveyors.
All surveyors hate architects and all architects hate surveyors.

What a wonderful profession

I dont understand "proper surveying" a Building Surveyor is a proper surveyor... If you are referring to a general practice surveyor- who deals with leases?

Part of a Building Surveyors role could include project management. Which IMO has more money involved.

I have friends who call themselves surveyors- but when asked what the problem on a house is, they couldnt tell you.. its a joke!

Yes

And to answer the question above about proper surveying, a QS will deal with a project from the ground up including the design and building stages of a project, therefore more knowledge is needed. A building surveyor does what Seth says

I remember when studying for my QS degree one of our Lecturers saying that Building Surveyors were the ones who couldn't handle the QS degree

When I was at Carillion we had a QS who done nothing but take off quantities all day every, I'd be suicidal doing that job! However in most cases the QS and the Contracts Manager/Project Engineer would generally administer and manage the contract between them.
