it is brilliant exercise i'll say that's for sure, only problem is once you get the bug it gets expensive, I acquired my road bike from work, it's a fixie. Did it up over a week and love it so much I'm now after a new road bike.

John-d, you would be surprised how hard it is to keep up a pace of 10mph when you are new cycling even on flat roads with just a slight headwind, trust me because I have just started back up cycling again! Ive got a proper good seat as well and the arse ache is untrue after 50 miles spread over 5 days last week, was struggling to walk round the office
I would suggest doing it 3 times a week to start (Mon Wed Fri) and taking the car the other 2 days and gradually easing yourself into it.
Dr Pepper's advice is good also

But how long have you been cycling for Alun? Ive come back to it after 2 years of sitting in an office and doing no exercise at all, on a cheap bike, so for me, an avg 10mph is great. On the same course in similar conditions Ive gone from an average of 7mph to 10.9mph in 2 weeks, which I am well happy with

Just been out and got 5.5 miles in 28 minutes, new record and I wasn't even hammering it, amazing what a few rest days can achieve

What do you guys need a trip computer for?
If you're measuring distance, then go out and get an A-Z streetmap and measure your route.
Set your route and beat your time.
I cover 5 miles at 25 mins. Thats with some inclines.

Theory is quite similar to a car and MPG really, its about using your fuel as efficiently as possible (so your energy). Too low a cadence you are putting unnecessary strain on your body, too high a cadence you are wasting your energy on nothing (if anything, if you go too high it actually produces a negative effect).

On road tyres averaging 15-20mph on flat ish roads should be no problem.
