I m about to buy a 172 & i have looked at both the cup & the 172. The cup is 0-60 in 6.8secs & the 172 is 0-60 in 7.2secs. The cup has been striped of its luxury items to save weight but it actually sits 3mm lower than the 172, don t know why though.

I would rather a 172 than a Type-R.

But I would not have either, I would have a Astra GSi.

Type R would still crack its anus open top end. VTEC engine is restricted to 146mph, unrestricted its BYE BYE GSI !

Astra GSI is cool but if you consider the power & type of engine it has compared to a type r then its shit. But then the astras more tunable because it has a turbo.

my brother has just got the 2.0 ltr 16v 172,
beleive me this is car worth the money! he used to have an astra gsi but sold it and this is much faster because of the lightness! It leaves a lot of cars embarrased,
my choice for that kind of money or few £££ more for a type r

No, this is the newer Turbo Astra GSi.

The potential to tune this beast is annormous.

Richy, the Type-R is not restricted to 146mph. That is its top speed, how fast do you believe a N/A 2.0 16v can go?

BYE BYE TYPE-R.

the gsi and the type r are much bigger, much more expensive cars, so there is little point in comparing them!

Mattyboy - how old are you, and what do you pay on insurance on the 172?

The 172 is grp 17 insurance, same as type r and scoob turbo!

I would purchase a low mileage Calibra Turbo instead.

0-60 - 6.4, top whack of 155mph, full leather interior, wicked handling.

Mate got a 40,000 mile one for £4,600. He is 20 years old, got 2 years no claims and pays £1200 TPF&T insurance.
