The whole debate on the manned moon landings seems an impressive one but the only thing I fail to understand is if the moon was that important in the big scheme of our place in the universe then why have we not been back? Why didn't we build a research centre on there? Why build a research centre in the gap in between instead?

People argue about the cost of the missions, the lack of gravity, the lack of water, etc but if thats the case why build the space station? For every arguement to not build on the moon its the same arguement for to not have the space station.

I'm not saying it didn't happen I'm just sceptical as to the reasons we went there, stopped going there and then decided to build in between. Whether we have better technology now or know more than before it still seems pretty retarded to me.

Edit: And no i don't believe in aliens!

What I don't get is, how come we could get there and back with technology from 50 years ago, but now its such a struggle? Like that shuttle that blew up a few years back?

Much easier and less fuel to dock with the space station than land and then take off from the moon, it's also considerably closer.

Is there anyone in here with any intelligence (or even some common sense) at all that wants to comment?

Airliners are still crashing after being in heavy use for over half a century, what's your point?

Mankind stopped going to the moon because it just wasn't required, the spacerace was the biggest, most important and most expensive penis flexing contest in the history of mankind - and once it was won, nobody was going to voluntarily continue that expense.

There's little more to learn about the moon (at the moment), what's more important for the immediate future of human spaceflight is knowing how the human body reacts to extensive time in space, hence we have the ISS.

On the note of the spacerace, due to the sheer importance of it at the time - do you really think the Russians would sit down and keep quiet if there was just a hint of a conspiracy from somebody with a measurable quanitity of intelligence?
