it uses 3g, in settings/accounts and sync you have the top bit which is something like "background data", if thats ticked it updates the weather and news and facebook etc at whatever intervals you have the bit below that set to. So you can put hotmail to update ever hour during the day then every 2 hours after 6 for example, same with weather etc

none of that looks to be causing it, it was the location thing that was raping gps and app updates that raped the 3g.

The circle arrow things are auto-sync. Leave that on if you want the weather etc to update, it basically is the same thing that Mike said about earlier. You can set the screen brightness to automatic in the settings, I have it on that
