I like it when people compare new to 2nd hand. We've all done it mind.

Horses for courses, why by a new car and loose 20% overnight when you can buy a better 6-12 month old one(which will still be like new) and loose less money. Thus making the comparison totally relevent. I have £20k and therefore have the choice between the two cars at said point in time regardless of age.

disagree.
in that case why buy a new subaru impreza for 30k when you can get a classic that does the same job for 2k

Because a £2k classic won't be better than a £30k subaru.
Whereas a £20k second hand Audi TTS will be better than a £20K new french hatch.

You're comparing a hot hatch against a convertible TT. Going on your way of thinking why would you buy the TT when you could save even more and buy a 6-12 month old Clio?

Why do that when you could have a 7year old TT half price

You could get a 15 year old A8 for £1k, why would you not buy one of those?

You boys haven't grasped the concept of this have you.
You're all suggesting buying alternative cars that aren't as good.
The TT was just an example of how you can get a BETTER car (IMO of course) for the same or less money.

How is a TT a better small hot hatch than a Clio?
