we design timber frame houses, every wall is timber

Safe option is to put in some form of lintel, can do it with timber on edge, we use 2no 45mm x 145mm bits nailed together and held up with 2-3 cripple studs under each end

What's directly above and below the wall in question? If there is nothing it won't be load bearing.

Painted the front door a nice bright red - used to be a dark wood stain, same as windows. They got painted gloss white, like the door surround.

Started work on the master bedroom, ensuite and walk-in-wadrobe

2 doors to add, 1 door to block, 1 wall to build..... Used the door frame from one cupboard that I've expanded and left open, then other from the door being blocked. I wasnt goign to pay the local archiatectural salvage placey £250 for facings only (in the same stlye)!!!

I couldn't bear living in a house I was doing up . The dust itself is enough. Every time I work on house I cough up black shit and pull black bogies out for two days. I didn't read the first page I take it this is grade 1 listed ?

ach, its a decent enough size to be able to live in whilst doing work. We arent doing the whole house in one go so the dust isnt constant. One room at a time, slow n' steady.

laura - I sometimes question my sanity but I really dont think i'd be happy in a house that doesnt have big rooms and high ceilings - ie most new build are out. And to buy a house of this size in this area thats already done to what were wanting would be £650k up i think.

AK I don't mean to hi jack but thought you may know the answer to a question, I'm wanting to do my loft out what do I use for boarding between the lats and does any strengthening need to take place? Do I need new loft insulation too at the mo it's old fibreglass style insulation which is itchy as feck

Insulation will be fine (it will be under the floor so dont worry about it itching!), just use chipboard to floor it then any finshed flooring (carpet etc) on top of that.

Stregthening - wouldnt think so... should have fairly substantial joist holding the celing up for the room below.

If you are adding a staircase, yes... you'll need to alter things

If you are making a room up there with any form of weight you will either need a new floating floor or all ceilings down and replace with correct size timber. Will probably be 3x2 with upright supports . This will not support any decent weight and uprights will be in way. See my thread for pics . Massive job . Also you will have to kingspan in-between roof timbers

pottering around in the master bedroom again.

Ceiling down, boarded, taped, filled...

facings.... used a heatgun to get most of the paint & varnish off before stripping with MC Paint Stripper. Will clean, sand, clean and see what the shade looks like, dont think these will need bleached - the middle (walk in wardrobe) will for sure.

done a bit more joinery, cutting facings and skirtings/mouldings to size. The middle (walk in wardrobe) door will need bleached... its not from this house and has been stained at somepoint over the last 100+ years

Couldnt bit any door facing black at the salvage placey that were the right size and in the correct wood so got a bit of an old church pew and made them

They'll look ok once finished

heatgun is the best for getting the majority off, but i'd always use some stripper to help get the remains off, esp on older wood that may not be completly flat
