Nail on the head for me, I hate driving a diesel. Petrol next for me, even though it will cost me more

People who think diesels are horrible to drive have never driven a modern diesel or are racing their mates to work and back everyday.

Telegraph Motoring article = The hidden cost of diesel cars

quote:
Models tested by Which? came from a variety of classes, including superminis, estates and 4x4s. Among the findings were that drivers covering an annual mileage of 10,672 would need to own a 1.6-litre diesel Ford Fiesta costing £15,495 and returning 62.8mpg for 7.8 years before it started costing less than a 1.25-litre petrol Fiesta costing £13,095 and returning 47.1mpg.

A 2.0-litre diesel Vauxhall Astra at £23,135 and 55.4mpg would take 8.6 years to bring savings over a 1.4-litre petrol model returning 43.5mpg. And a BMW 5-series 530d costing £40,945 and returning 40.9mpg would take 14.1 years to beat its petrol equivalent, which costs £37,300 and delivers 34mpg economy.

to use the example of a Fiesta

diesel
55k miles, £5k

70k miles, £5k

65k miles, £5k

petrol
32k miles, £5k

23k miles, £5k

ONLY 9000 miles, £5500

i can't see the benefit on resale myself.

disclaimer, these above listed examples where the first three results from my search with a 1.4 engine
search criteria, Fiesta, 1.4-1.6l engine, between £5-6k national search

They're talking about the mk6, they don't do a 2.0 petrol which isn't a vxr

I need to buy a cheap to run car, funny how i've been looking at golf and astra diesels. This thread has pointed out that it would probably be more expensive, unsure what to get now.

Can't compare costs of a 2.0l diesel to a 1.4 petrol.

Might aswel compare a metro to Ferarri.

They don't even say what the 530D equivilent petrol is that they're quoting figures for.

Probably a 1.6 going off their other biased examples.

Also not mentioning resale value.

I just don't think people looking to buy a 1.4 petrol will even be considering a 2.0 diesel and vice versa. It just stood out to me as a bit of a mis-match.

Comparing a 1.4 to a 1.9 diesel is odd. 1.4 will be shit to drive. Not even a comparison. Petrol people do this. A 1litre micra is as efficient as an a4 tdi. Yes but its a small shit box car with no spec.

What benefit are you not seeing? The diesels were more to buy new and they're now worth more second hand?

This, been looking at mk5 2.0tdi golfs, and a 1.8 petrol version (same with astras), dropping to a 1.4 would be a silly comparison.

Compared to a petrol they kind of do suck, small power band, no revs, poo sound, shorter gearing meaning constantly changing gear.

Thats not to say they dont have advantages - id have one certainly.

They're also paying retail for a Vauxhall.

And 10k a year which without doing maths would be difficult to justify.

Price on the day, resale price and 20k and it would be a different conversation.
