Jim mine is bonkers money to fix. Plus what I was reffering to is an Electric car. This means the £200 odd I spend on juice a month, would instead pay the 0% finance on a new electric car that would cost me £6 a month to drive to work in So instead of pissing money on fuel, I will at least get a small return on it when in a few years I will have a car I can sell
Just the battery lease thats a bit shit.
Weird. Its exactly what I think about. As work is 16 miles away. Hardly any traffic.
Whats the main choices? Do many companies make them?

There's a few I think, was looking at Prius etc but they are no good really.
Zoe looks really nice IMO, sat in a couple at the shows. Fiancé has a 2012 Clio and its great, this is like that but with electrickery. My work is about 6miles away so a little commute and there's no driving it on cold start etc. just get in on and go. Sounds great really. Would just use the M for days when I wanted to treat myself

Electric cars cost too much and don't go far enough just now. Much better off in just about every way to buy an efficient one that uses petrol or diesel.
Much higher capacity batteries are required, then they're still charged up from some old coal or gas fired power station anyway.
Good because they take technology further, pretty useless in real life.

Older Smart Car (Brabus if poss)
Remap
Job done
For a town car, frickin great fun, just don't take it on the motorway.
Even better, you can probably tow it on the back of the X5 if you ever need to

My cus had a C1 and I really didn't rate it. Thought my Corsa was a nicer drive, was more substantial and was far better spec'd

if you did go with a Smart, my mate recommends the Roadster, sporty looking and quick enough, plus looks 100x than the smart fortwo.

Tech has to start somewhere.
Personally my next car won't be electric but I'm glad people are buying them.
The range thing doesn't even bother me. For a couple where one does short school runs and shopping and the other drives around for a job a short and long range car makes sense.
100 miles is plenty for day-to-day stuff providing you remember to charge it.

I agreed with that bit in my last sentence, it has to start somewhere.
At the price the electric cars are just now it still doesn't make sense. Resale value would also be a big worry for me. Battery life and much better technology in 5 years time making your old one obsolete.
This is obviously the way it works if you want the latest technology, however, a car costs a bit more than a phone does.

Electric car as a second/commuter vehicle makes perfect sense to me.
I do an 8/9mile roudn trip every day and the odd 10-15mile journey in the evening. An electric car would do just fine, with the battery lease if you want to go further you ring them up and they loan you a Megane for the day.
Its not perfect for the masses, for someone like me it is incredibly desireble to minimize commuting expenses. Not fussed about the environmental issues (Still needs a powerstation) it just makes sense to my wallet.
Plus it costs the same as a Clio etc (after Gov grant) and will mean instead of wasting £4k on petrol a year, it would be paying for a car. At the end I am likely to get £3-6k back of that. Much better than giving Shell that money IMO

Are you really minimizing commuting expenses though. With the price of the car/battery rental for the Zoe, where does it meet, if ever, the line for a tiny engined petrol?

See, owning a hybrid I've thought about this too. Chances are that hybrids will be miles better when I come to sell.
Thing is, though, that's the same with all cars really. Big advancements in hybrid and electric driven cars could have a tremendous impact on resale value of any car.
However I must say that I find any sort of revolution in the car industry highly unlikely. Things will continue to develop slowly, like they always have.
For a second car that doesn't need to make long runs, an electric car makes perfect sense to me.

Because you would still need to buy the vehicle, then put fuel in it? You are paying twice. The only downside is range with the current EVs. If you take away the downside of not needing to go far, there is no downside.

James, do you know anything about servicing intervals for electric cars?
They don't exactly need a change of oil or air filter...

The Zoe you rent the battery? How much does this cost?

Yeah £70 a month, so if the battery goes bad, Renault replace it (apparently, id imagine it would be a pain like most warranty claims)
Also there is no service cost apart from brakes. No oil changes, no cold start. Stop start traffic or any of that nonsense. Get in turn on and go.

If Renault offer the 4+ deal with 0% finance then it will be a hard deal to beat.
4year warranty
4year servicing
4year breakdown
Id buy one without hesitation providing I didst hate driving it. Also they give you a charging station also.

How much does that cost over 4 years compared to a 0% deal on a comparable petrol, including fuel.
