I've seen some reports on Motoring sites slating the M4 name as it now shares it with a shitty, boring motorway over here.
The M1, M3, M5 & M6 also share names with shitty, boring Motorways over here, yet nothing is said of those...

I don't get it either.
1 - small hatch
2 - small coupe/cab
3 - medium saloon
4 - medium coupe
5- large saloon
6 - large coupe
7 - limousine
It's not illogical or difficult

All those spondoolies, just to get some scene wheels.
It's a bit ott for my liking, almost looks like it was designed in someones forza or nfs garage, guess I'm just jealous as it's a bmw.

you are I reckon.
I agree, most new cars have shit wheels. I think vehicle manufacturers are run by old men who see youngsters putting 'alloyz' on their motors and think they can do that from the factory.
Same thing you see when a middle aged guy does a car up. Like the tosser in my work who put chrome side steps on his kuga with 17'' wheels why? You're not a midget and it's not 10ft high.

So people don't dent the doors probably, that's a good reason to have them on my Disco.

Current/past series lineup:

Future series lineup:
1 hatchback
2 coupe
3 saloon/touring
4 coupe

The issue I have is that the M3 was always a compact 2 door performance saloon.
Now BMW may have lost their way a bit with regards to some of that formula over the years and in spite of building 4 door derivatives on the 36, 46 and 92 platforms, the car was still called the M3.
To my mind, the M3 and it's badge/name have a very special place in motoring and motorsport history.
To render the M3 purely a four door saloon and moreover, give the two door variant the 'wrong' name, seems like a very odd move to me.
It seems to me, that it would have made good sense from a heritage standpoint, for BMW to have retained the M3 name for their 2 door variants and if they simply HAD to have a new name with a '4' in it, then apply that to the four door and four door touring variants of the same body.
Just a thought.

Or in 20 years time the M4 might have the same level of prestige.
They're not a company famous for standing still.

Calling the saloon and estate models '4' and the coupe, cabriolet and gran coupe models '3' would be totally backwards in comparison to their model range.

Shittest M car ever it doesn't even count in my eyes. And I did think you meant the 1M as most people seem to call it an M1 and it annoys me.

It all seems like a bit of a bizarre marketing experiment though don't you think Robin?
I mean, has there ever been a 4 Series before?

True, but it's a hell of a long time to wait when they've spent over 25 years establishing the 'M3' in the popular consciousness Ian.

No but there's never been a 2 series before and that seems to have been glossed over.
There's never been a 5 series GT either or a 6 series with 4 doors, and everyone has forgotten that there wasn't a 4x4 before the X5...

I've not forgotten.
Them and audi, and probably every other manufacturer with nondescript cars that no-one cares about have been doing it for a while. They continually bring out derivative cars for markets that didn't exist.
People obviously buy them though so they'll continue to do it.

its called marketing and utilising life cycle of the car
Audi A5 in coupe/ convertible and 5 door is basially an A4
BMW X1 is a 3 series floor plan
Look at the mini SUV's Merc, BMW and Audi are going to bring out soon
Not saying its right but that's the car manufacturing

Actually, since reading that rumour last night and reading it again today it seems to have been put to bed.
