See, my car has gradually improved since buying it. Better now than it was 70,000miles ago

Sure. The clio is just coming up to 70k miles now, serviced every year, always replace stuff, had ball joints, ARB bushes, brakes, tryes, etc. Still feels like a bag of nails now compared to 3 years ago.

I blame the mechanics, can't trust anyone these days. Only way to be be 100% sure about things is to do it yourself.

My dads 09 kuga with 40k needs the alternator and battery replacing. I'd say that was about average mileage and it's gone wrong

The poor bit was sarcasm but it's always people who have for some reason had to get a higher mileage one who want to argue about how they are better than the low mileage option.

There is no valid reason why a similarly driven high mileage car is better than a low mileage car. Arguing a well driven high miler is better than a low mileage badly driven one is as bad as people who compare modded cars v standard ones in performance arguments.

I bet you have a VHS tape box with a grinder, few packs of skins and a bag of grass in it.

No one with a 200, 000 mile Escort doesn't.

Really?

Having worked on the best of the best brand new trucks, and the oldest heaps of shit, I would much prefer one of the older high milers.

We had a truck hit 1 million miles a few years ago, and it had never had any major engine work, or even a set of injectors.

We have had brand new trucks with 2 or 3 sets of injectors in the first 100k.

Its no different. I would also say new cars/trucks are far more unreliable than older ones.

High mileage cars are great because they are cheaper. I don't see how anyone else can justify otherwise. I got a faster, higher trim with more optional extras for the same price as my pov spec slow as shit Astra because it's higher miles. Was worth the change.

Of course there is

Lots of low mileage examples are garage/driveway queens they have the bare minimum of maintenance which is normally fuel, a wash and an MOT (eventually)...

The owners think 'I hardly use the car what is the point of having any work done on it' so they end up never having a service, the oil turns to mayo and because it never visits a dealer none of the manufacturer re-calls get done.

My old dear is a perfect example, her cars always look immaculate on the face of it, they were insanely low mileage and always garaged but as they got older they were riddled with problems.. She had a ridiculously immaculate Mk4 Ford Escort Cabrio with 25,000 miles on the clock at 10 years old.. piece of shit would regularly break down, the battery tray was rotten through from where the batteries kept failing (from lack of charge) then leaking when the alternator over charged them.. Hand-brake would regularly seize on, the oil always looked like it had CHG failure because of the condensation build up etc. etc.

Similar story with her other cars! but her last one was the best! She bought a 1 year old MGTF, which had a CHG fail during its MOT with only 16k on the clock.. numerous other starting issues and electrical faults (probably because it was forever being jump started)... Oh and it went through 2 alternators

On the flip side my old man used to do some serious miles and would regularly rack up 150-200k on company cars over 3-5 years.. They rarely ever missed a beat as they were regularly serviced because they were regularly used.!

So my point is:

There is more of a chance of a high mileage car being maintained correctly! on the flip side there are loads of high mileage cars that have been run into the ground most of those will be privately owned or taxis

Old dears cars aren't the best. Stuff that's low/average mileage but not owned by an old dear so has been serviced and maintained as it should be is a different story and I would imagine is the kind of thing John is talking about. That's the kind of thing I'd buy rather than a high miler.

But it'll be obvious that is the case with a high miler. Making it easier to buy.

No there's not.

Your old dears car will be high mileage one day and you just said it's not been maintained at all, kind of overrules your point.

High mileage cars tend to be older and have more previous owners, so I would say there's more chance of it not being maintained correctly at some point in it's life.

I should point out, I'm talking about NEWER high mileage cars with 1 or 2 previous owners and stacks of history.. the sort of car that will save you a bucket of cash.. Over buying a 3 year old car with 20k on the clock and little history other than a first dealer service and an mot.

I'm not talking about buying a 10 year old Piece of shit with 15 previous owners and 250k on the clock..

The same person could go and see a 3 year old car with 80k on the clock and a mountain of history but walk away in favour of buying the same car with 30k on the clock and no history.. that's just retarded.

I replace something which was probably alright for another 10k miles, but then break two other things in the process which were perfectly fine

As a result, my car is pretty much brand new
