Was at another 1/4 mile day on sunday and a new pb time. 14.482 at 96mph with a 2.177 70ft time
Really happy at the improvent. All ive done from last day is fit avo coilovers and toyo t1r tyres and lost a bjt more weight (now at 880kgs)
Just need to make up my mind what way to go next eithet
A. Buy a trailer and loose as much weight as possible
B. Keep it mots and buy some drag tyres and loose weogh but still remainig road legal

Why does everyone go for the SAAB lumps these days, another internet trend or is there some logic behind it? And by logic I don't mean people saying they are "stronger" than a C20LET or other guff.

They're probably a lot cheaper to buy.

Until there are 500 threads on Migweb etc then the price goes through the roof

Price of a full car is less than half what it would cost for a tired C20LET. And the chances of buying a ropey old time bomb engine are slim considering the cars are probably owned by old men.
More readily available too.
Tuning potential is growing massively, can map them at home with a laptop. And the engines are stronger than a C20LET. A few pushing close to 500bhp and not needed to even open the engine up, just big turbo's bolted on to a standard block with standard internals.

Better off just leaving it in the Saab and having a nicer interior.

seeing as the guy is trying to make his corsa faster, why would he leave it in the Saab?

so much love in here
cant see the fascination in the b204 lumps myself... only fast saab conversion out there is the corsaab engineering lads and their using the b234...
seems to be very consistent in the 10 seconds area

Is that a purpose built drag car though??
Nothing wrong with the b204 for a road/quick drag car.
Local guy Jamie built a Vectra GSi with a b204 (will be in TV soon, not long had it featured), and was doing 12s on his 1st visit to Santa Pod. Its just mainly a fun road car. Standard internals, with a holset HX35 strapped to it making 400+ bhp. Still needed fine tuned and a few issue's addressed. He's now sold it but i think it last made about 470bhp with alot more to come just by ditching the cast manifold. Easily over 500bhp with a better manifold. Standard management too just played with.

That's all very well and good that they are stronger. But how many people are buying them to make big power (400+) or just buying them because they are stronger and running EDS ph2 chips

Not sure what point you are trying to make?

I would say they are buying them knowing that even at 240bhp, they aren't even tickling the surface of stressing them. Stick a set of dodgy EDS copies on a tired old £1k C20LET and its not uncommon for it to go pop or start playing up. The Saab lumps are over engineered and laugh at that sort of power level.

No real point. people buy them because they will take 400bhp, then run 240bhp which any LET can run all day everyday.
Fair enough if it is cheaper granted. but seems the usual thing. going to build 500bhp turbo monster etc, fit it run 250 then sell it.
And how old and tired is a C20LET compared to an old tired SAAB engine?

I think they were still using the Saab engine's up until 2001 ish so quite a bit newer. And more chance of it having had an easy life. C20LET on the other hand, finding a standard engine is slim. Most have probably had at least a set of phase chips running through them which will have reduced its life span. Its common knowledge that in this day and age, they aren't mega reliable. Turbo's are weak, sensors play up alot and fault finding can be a nightmare. Then parts are hard to get or cost a premium.
Knowing how well the Saab engine's take the punishment gives piece of mind too.
On the whole, you can pick up a b204 for the same price as a 150k mile XE. Slot it in, tune it at home and have a reliable 240bhp just by playing on your laptop.
I would say most of it comes down to cost. £ for power, its hard to beat.

Fair point on value as stated. You mention playing with power on your laptop? How so?
Anyone running 500bhp I would have thought would have gone to a custom ECU I would have thought, either on a B204 or a C20 LET

isn't this topic about drag racing though
its still a complete chassis caged corsa b... no real reason it couldn't be a road car anyway
and i was stating a point that nobody set a good time out of a b204 yet, my point still stands...
b234 is a much torque-ier engine and torque wins on the 1/4mile...
welldone to your mate on getting into the 12's on a turbo engine though

Nope, factory management/ecu. Think its something called "T5 Suit" which is used to map it.
The 12s were done with the car in full road trim, with a 26stone driver, with not much experience of Santa Pod, while still in the very early stages of research and development. I would say doing 12s is pretty good going.
At 440bhp, it was making 400lb/ft torque.
You say the 2.2 is going to be the next big thing, i say the Saab lumps will be the next big craze. Lets see who's right lol.
