I'd be getting the cow done for leaving the scene of an accident.

I'd love to hear that report to the car insurance. " I came round the corner and crashed into a er... Cow"
Seriously though motorway cops the other week puts things like that into perspective about how lucky or unlucky you can be on those roads. It's the same round here with the New Forest.

How did the folk in the house know who owned the cow without even seeing it?

If you ran down one of my cows I would be pretty but I would talk to my insurance company about it, thing about the NFU is they are consultants too.
Bad luck on both parties, hope the cow is ok and at least you are

Because I told him where it had happened (right beside his house). Same farmer owns all the fields and cattle around the area.

Everyone is saying you should drive at a speed where you are able to stop
Its a fucking black cow in the dark, you would need to be doing about 30 all the way to where your going if you had this attitude towards all night time driving, the cow shouldnt have been there, same as if he were to have hit an abandoned car that was sitting sideways on the road so no reflectors were visable.... the car shouldnt have been there but I forgot everyone goes 20mph round corners in the dark incase a cow might be there and the rest all have heat seaking night vision

Because you don't do it doesn't mean you shouldn't be doing it.
You should potentially be going round the corner even slower than 20mph if you can't see it's clear.

Aye then the car behind you that isn't a paranoid freak comes round the corner and ends up in a field avoiding some idiot who's doing 20mph just incase

They shouldn't be driving so fast either.

In a perfect world, but I bet nobody in this thread could honestly say they drive about at night creeping round corners at 20mph just incase...

That still doesn't make it right, or change the fact that not driving at that speed means it's your fault and not the cow.

Was the op driving around with his headlights off?
End of the day you'll just have to see what the insurance say, it doesn't get anymore black and white.

Spoke to the farmer today. Not a single mark on the cow. Cow had ran straight back into the field after the collision and back up to the farm. He had just got the cow that night from the mart and it had been separated from it calf and was looking for it apparently.

If you hit the car in your example you would be deemed at fault btw

Update - Farmers insurance has accepted liability and car is getting fixed on 15th November.
Took a while to sort out but glad I don't have to go through my insurance or fix it privately.

Good news. How comes it too so long for them to admit liability?

I'd say a month to get sorted out is pretty bloody fast.
Glad the guy admitted fault. A cow in the road is the farmers fault no matter what speed anyone is doing.

Dropped motor off yesterday at bodyshop and got the courtesy car delivered. BMW 328i.
Better car than I was expecting to get. Quite like it, even though it's really basic spec. Feels really gutless compared to the 335 though, no surprise really.
I've really missed having a white car for some reason too.
