I'm more than likely going for an A5 3.0TDi Quattro next, preferably a 'Black' edition.
Also, realistically if you're doing 24,000 commuting miles a year (48week working year x 500miles per week) then you're likely to be doing 30k+ with your personal mileage. I'd not worry too much about tax bracket as the cost per mile will be peanuts; get something that you want rather than what bracket it falls into and concentrate on economy and owners reviews abou maintenance. With that kind of commute, you want something bombproof, not something which is going to struggle in a morning or be at more risk of breaking down en route.

I'm wondering if I'd be better with a slightly older VW over the Vaux.

Rob's Passat is really well specced for the £4,600 he paid for it. Half leather, half suade (sp*), climate control etc. etc. you'll get newer for your money but if you're doing 30k a year, I'd consider paying less and buying a 100k+ mileage car which has already taken the depreciation hit.

Bought an insignia, 2011, 160bhp version, 30k miles, SRi, 18's, Sat Nav, Cruise, Bluetooth, paid a bit more than I would have liked, pick it up tonight.

No you can't.
Best I have managed in real world is slightly over 70mpg, and that is taking it very easily.
However, my dash says 100 mpg

Insignia's are good but after around 70k they do not age well
Almost every car I know in our fleet has had new engines or issues with electrics
They are a very nice car for large mileage but wouldn't like to own/run one out of my own pocket

My breakdown cover is with the AA. £9.50 covers the 308 and 207 who ever is driving them. I wanted a policy that will tow me to a garage of my choice and not some local place.
308 Diesel is not a bad buy. I've only have wear and tear up to 45k on my petrol version.
The 308 becomes very boring after a while! I'm wanting to change mine for a slightly older Fabria VRS which is also in your price range for a low mileage one.

IvIarkgraham,
Before giving your insults, just remember what you own/drive. An old Astra...
I am not proud what i drive, it's what i can afford at the moment through my own choice. I chose to buy a house rather than a campervan or new car.

Looks identical to my dart-tag, prepaid chip to save me paying the tolls on the Dartford river crossing.
Any similar crossings near you?
Edit: massive image
