Have you driven a Defender, Steve? They are fucking diabolical! Its like driving a transit van with a seat that wont go back far-enough and a fucked steering-rack..
TOTAL BOLLOCKS!

Load of shihte about Landys been un reliable. And if they do break they are a piece of piss to fix as long as you know your way around a set of spanners.
It will leak all over the drive though.

how long are you aiming to keep it,
Defenders as we know them are soon to die, due to regulations a complete replacement will be due by 2017 latest
demand for the Classic look defenders will only rise

I would of thought a Landy is so hardcore it could tow itself home if it did break down.

Its got to be the same type of moron (sorry Pow) who would buy a classic VW Camper..
Why would you buy (at a MASSIVE premium) something that drives worse than pretty much anything else on the road! Its not like Defenders even have any decent spec or creature comforts, they are just big piles of over-priced shit!

Rover engines are unreliable in general. No matter the car they are fitted in.

That's the later D4, D3 is relatively easy to work on-D4 has to have body removed or a turbo change!

Place round here refurbs land Rover Defenders and sell them for absolutely mind boggling amounts of money. Especially if it has the twin cab setup/pick up style.
Talking a 1989 Defender 90 with some Halfords wheels, recaro seats and some questionable suspension and paint. Yours for £60,000
Yes, £60,000

I've got a 2007 2.8l diesel Jeep Cherokee - had it from 3k, now on nearly 50k. Been spot on. Never broken down, never needed anything other than routine servicing done - with the exception of a recent recall for a potential suspension issue which they sorted out free of charge and lent me a Chrysler Sebring while it was being done.
Comfortable if a bit plasticky inside, it costs a fortune to run (not much change from £500 a year tax and returns 18mpg on a good day) - but more importantly it is a complete piece of shit to drive - rolls and bounces all over the place, no idea what's going on at the wheels as you can steer it with your pinky, and has the turning circle of Dawn French on her way home from the all-you-can-eat buffet. It will, however, drive up/over/through practically anything and doesn't break a sweat towing two horses in an Ifor Williams trailer up a muddy hill in the rain.
There is something quite satisfying about operating it, though - and I use the word 'operating' deliberately rather than 'driving' - it *feels* like a machine, and that's kind of fun sometimes.
You can pick up one of a similar age/mileage for around £6k.
The least worst 4x4 I've ever driven was a Mitsubishi Shogun - which essentially drove like a car rather than a tractor.

Slightly off the wall but what about a Mitsubishi Delica; all the capabilities of a Pajero/Shogun with the benefit of a really adaptable interior and massive ground clearance. A friend picked up a later, bonnetted one for under a grand with 6 months tax and test and it's great fun!!

Over priced, yet awesome. Each to their own and that.

Kept in a dry garage and not used off road. Normally that would sound good, but not a defender
