It's the rear axle carrier panel that cracks. Basically the part that the diff carrier/subframe connects to the car.

Old one out new one in and a resin injection to make it stronger. A few companies are also offering a strengthening kit which is basically a series of plates welded to the points that are known to crack.

If the car is over ten year old and hasn't had a new floor it can be be an expensive gamble. Luckily mines was done a few years ago.

Really nice looking LSB mate

Can you tell if it's been done by looking or only by the service history?

It's not the subframe Adam. It's the body itself.

The boot floor actually tears at load bearing points where the suspension hardware and subframe attach.

Some have gone REALLY badly. There's footage on youtube of one example where the rear of the car is more or less on the verge of breaking off. (the drive-train, suspension and exhaust componentry were all helping to hold the car together)

Such a shame too. Such lovely cars. And for BMW to make such a fundamental error in the body design and manufacture, just spoils the whole idea of the car and owning one.

I had a Z3, and an E46 and neither had cracked

That said, the E46 was only 7years old at the time so wasnt old or massively high miles.

Thing is you say BMW made an error, but most cars needing them replaced are 7-8 years old now and BMW will happily replace it if the car is standard which I think is pretty fair…if you've modified it then you've potentially sped up the process. I know so many that have never cracked but you only hear about the ones that have….

4k job is mostly labour through BMW and the replace the whole boot floor, a mates CSL has just had it done and his car is modified and tracked too, it's down to certain friendly BMW dealers.

The cheaper alternative is the injection resin but this just delays the problem rather than prevents it

The option I'd go for if it happened to me is drop the subframe and weld the cracks then you can buy plates you weld around the mounting points for about £150, there's no reason why it would ever crack again

It's a minor issue tbh I don't see why people make such a big deal out of it it's a pretty easy fix even more so if you don't mind getting your hands dirty as I'd do all the work myself

I'd say the back falling off the car is a pretty major problem, which is why BMW normally fix/contribute.

If it wasn't a big deal they probably wouldn't even acknowledge it.

190*

Not a bodge at all. A bodge is just injecting resin. Dropping everything and welding the cracks properly is hardly a bodge.

Well it is because not only the metal around the cracks but every join on the panel is weakened
