one thing i do (ironically to try and save space...) is delete the iphoto library every time i use iphoto, if its (stupidly) hiding/putting some copy of this somehwere then that could certainyl be causing some of this as i do import a lot of photos from my phone on there

I stopped using iPhoto as I found it wrecked havoc on my file structure. I never made sense of the the way iPhoto handles files and it seems to make multiple random copies of each photo every time you do something.
Granted, it's been years since I tried iPhoto, so it might behave differently now.
Using Picasa is much nicer as it's essentially just a viewer and you can then sort everything manually in Finder.

And if you get a 'portable' external drive then you don't have to use a 'power brick'.

Try running Disk Inventory X - http://www.derlien.com/ - Useful for finging what files you have any where they are.
I used this and found that I had a load of temporary files which were created due to sleeping too much (had not rebooted in months)

It wouldn't surprise me if it hasn't. I sat down at one of my customers MBP yesterday as he complained it wouldn't open Excel. Looking at the info on the system and the last boot time was 13/12/2013. Over 2 months since it had been shut down. MacBook owners think because their OS is sooo much damn better than Windows they can just snap the lid shut on their laptop when they are done for the day. Needless to say a simple reboot solved the problem and sped the machine up by a noticable level.

I'm not sure its quite that. Its probably more the fact that sleep has always worked on mac and they have come out of sleep quickly. Its only in recent years that this has started to work across the board on windows devices.
As you say, rebooting any machine every so often is a good thing. We even reboot our 390 machines at work to clear up the crap

CleanMyMac will find all the ancillaries as well as the app file itself - there can be gigabytes of stuff in ~/Library/Application Support/GarageBand, ~/Library/Audio/Apple Loops and ~/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library depending on which version you have and whether or not you've opened it / opted to download the video lessons / additional content / plugins etc.

Language files can also use up a lot of storage which you can delete and get back GB

CleanMyMac sorts this out (and strips out PowerPC binaries if present) for you as well, although http://xslimmer.com can do this for free.
