1.5k for a car that MIGHT need a 2.5k rebuild is still a pretty good bang for buck track day car surely!

Hey Mav btw

With it being a wankel engine, they have rotor tips which do wear. I've heard of people mixing 2 stroke oil in with the petrol to help prevent wear?

My Man Flu kept me up last night so I spent hours reading about RX8s

Reliability aside, they don't seem to be brilliant performers anyway - quite lardy due to those suicide doors and fancy interiors.

Still think one would make a cracking value toy.

I've fancied an rx8 for the past year and when I sell a car I always look for 1 and read up about them but have never had the balls to go ahead and buy 1 due to the fact it could be fine for a week then boom no compression.

Some folk say about the 2 stroke trick, others don't. Some say you need to rev them to 4k and hold it for a few seconds before switching off, others say you don't.

I think the main problem is coils and leads. It's undetected when they break down, which in turn causes the rotor tips to wear down due to overfuelling.

I would take a punt on 1 that's had new genuine coils and leads within a certain period of time, new cat (also bad for fucking up and quite expensive) and a recent compression test.

I think the 231 version is on par with an ep3 performance wise, but most of the fun is in the chassis and the way they handle and the need to rev them right up to about 9k. Meant to sound good too. Id probably settle for a 192 version which is meant to be better as a daily driver due to having more torque and being a 5 speed instead of 6 on the 231.

I'm pretty certain the 6lb/ft extra is offset by the 39bhp extra that the more powerful one has.

And the mention of it being 5 speed instead of 6?

In gear speeds, at the 9000rpm rev limit on a standard tyre are as follows;

5 speed

45 - 78 - 106 - 157 - 206

6 speed

42 - 69 - 95 - 132 - 157 - 187

Even with the same power, the 6 speed would accelerate faster.

The 192 dosnt rev as high as the 231 though.

Wee bit more torque, longer gear ratios, better to live with as more of a town car surely?

Why would a 5 speed car be better than a 6 speed car if we're talking daily driver?

Surely the 6 speed would give better fuel consumption? Unless you drive everywhere at 20mph.

5 speed can be longer between gears so meaning less changing gear.

Engine will be more laboured to achieve the same speeds though due to longer gearing surely?

Yes, but as a daily driver for some people, changing gear less is better

Depends where you drive your daily, surely? My commute is predominantly dual carriageway so go through the gears and then stay in 6th until 10 miles down the road.

Most of my driving is town, roundabouts, junctions, 30mph zones etc.

As said, I have been reading up on them for the last year and general consensus is the 192 would be better for the driving I do.

My IS200 is 6 speed and I feel I'm always changing gear. I could go to work in the 307 and not need to come down further than 3rd on the journey whereas in the Lexus I would be down in 2nd. Gets tiring having to be in a lower gear then shifting up more.

There is none, but you were complaining that changing gear gets tiring.

Rx7s are probably a safer buy as they command more of a premium so more chance of getting 1 with a sound engine. Awesome looking cars too and hardly see them kicking about.

Maybe not I was sure I had seen one around that figure but even the cheapest, high mileage one on PH is a few grand more.
