I'll try get it done in sub 3 hours if I can. Have read that volume of people doing it can create a bit of bike traffic on the road which can hold you up so hopefully picking an early start time I can blitz it

Took the plunge and bought some SPD shoes to go with the pedals so as of the weekend I will have this combo:

Shimano M530 Pedals:

Shimano AM45 Shoes:
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-am45-spd-mountain-bike-shoes/

Should be an interesting first ride

Are these dropper seat posts worth having?

They all seem to be pretty expensive apart from a Giant branded one I have found:
http://www.cyclestore.co.uk/productDetails.asp?productID=53837&categoryID=515

£145.

Is it going to be rubbish?

I can't say particularly that one, no experience of it, but generally they are a revelation if you are doing that sort of riding. I recently got a revurb stealth for mine and it really does change how you ride. Without one you either find a seat position that is a compromise between the right height for climbing and low enough to be able to move about when descending. Or you manually adjust your seat constantly whilst out riding. The ability to have the seat slammed to the bottom and completely out the way for descending one second and then raised to the perfect position for climbing can really improve your riding.

Yes they weigh more

If you find it difficult getting clipped in and out, try cutting away more of the rubber sole on the shoes around the cleat.

AM45's are extremely good shoes in flat format. Excellent for keeping the elements out!

Not too bad - seems to get good reviews.

If you're into you more gravity orientated riding or like pinning the downhills and drop the saddle, they are a must. I've never looked back since being bought my. I have an old Gravity Dropper. I was always in the "I'd rather get off and use the quick release seat clamp than spend £200" but for those opportunities when you aren't resting before a decent it is superb! I wouldn't have an XC/all mountain bike without one now!

So, I haven't been on here a while because I've been too busy enjoying this bad boy.

Only ridden her once at Aston Hill. She is an absolute dream to ride. So balanced in the ear and plush when landing. Sticks to the berms. A league above my 2007 Demo 7 which was once one of the most sought after bikes.

Lovely! How is Aston at the moment? Saw they have just built a starting ramp for one of the runs

Running really well. The new trail Surface to Air is super fun although quite a few braking bumps. What they've managed to creste is outstanding.

Go on a dry day and you're sure to have fun.

The start ramp feeds everything except DH3.

There is a box on my desk from Wiggle. I think that means my new spud shoes have arrived. Just in time for the lovely weather!

SPD Shoes arrived, didn't fit.

Sent them back and ordered a different style as I wasn't keen on how chunky those AM45's were.

My shoe tactic has always been to buy my first pair from a shop so you get the right size and then next time around you can order the same again online, obviously only works if you are happy with the same shoes!
