From how I read it, Mercedes COULD attend the YDT which is no longer a YDT but they chose not to in the name of fairness.
quote: An FIA statement said Mercedes, who were banned from the young driver test for using their 2013 car in a Pirelli test in May, had "in the interests of the sport accepted to not participate in the (Silverstone) test".
Fair play tbh.

Horner would have had a full on break down if Mercedes were allowed to test. I don't think the sport needs more controversy atm anyway, the right decision

Didn't realise f1 tyres only cost 350 quid each thought they'd be much more

They only last about 40odd miles though tbf
Pretty poor value overall.

Quite expensive when you consider each team is issued with about 150 per weekend, and any non used ones (wets etc) are sent back to be destroyed/recycled anyway

Wouldn't make much difference imo, in terms of having a competitive advantage.
Lewis is at his peak and is getting the most out of the car right now.

Lewis may be but the car can always improve, and testing with a known quantity will always be better than throwing an extra variable (young driver) into the car.
I think the Merc is looking pretty good right now, but missing the test will most definitely hurt them.

Anyone seen the Pirelli press release?
ALL the cars who suffered had the rear tyres the wrong way round!

My worry is Red Bull make the most of of it out of anyone, bring a few awesome upgrades and run away into the distance. Ferrari dont really need to learn too much about the tyres, they'll use it to get some more reliable aero results seeing as they are struggling to get their upgrades to work IRL.
Hopefully wont hurt Merc too much, with Ferrari falling further behind in Quali they look the only team capable of dealing with RB at the moment. Unless we want a 4th Vettel title in 4 years, people should be hoping Merc continue their improvement.

Reeks a bit of passing the buck and defensive excuses, how can a slick be directional? could maybe understand with the wets...
Of course there maybe be structures in the tyre itself that is affected and id be interested to see any info on that

Even still, its Pirelli's fuck up . They mount the tyres! The tyre's current design is asymmetrical meaning they are only meant to be used on a certain corner of the car.
Its still a very poor standard of work on Pirelli's behalf.

Funny enough before the race on Sky they were talking about how some teams will swap round the tyres to make them last a bit longer if they have been used in quali

Any one got any details on how it matters if a LH rear is fitted to a RH corner and vice versa?

Makes sense, the left usually takes a hammering on clockwise circuits. Didnt realise the tyres were side specific though.
It will be really interesting to see how this all plays out, I've never known such a change like this mid season. In theory it probably means Kimi's hopes are over, they cant even qualify on these tyres never mind harder ones that run cooler. Alonso's could also be in doubt, they suffer like Lotus but not quite to the same extent. FI are another, although, they just seem to be able to not wear their tyres and could still qualify ok, wonder of they could pull a 1 stop?
On paper it seems like dream news from Merc and RB.

1) Rear tyres that were mounted the wrong way round: in other words, the right hand tyre being placed where the left hand one should be and vice versa, on the cars that suffered failures. The tyres supplied this year have an asymmetric structure, which means that they are not designed to be interchangeable. The sidewalls are designed in such a way to deal with specific loads on the internal and external sides of the tyre. So swapping the tyres round has an effect on how they work in certain conditions. In particular, the external part is designed to cope with the very high loads that are generated while cornering at a circuit as demanding as Silverstone, with its rapid left-hand bends and some kerbs that are particularly aggressive.
