things are inevitabley going to change (team america moment there )

went to see my mate who reconditions engines for a living last nite and hes advised me to stop driving my can and get the crank out and measured as apparently its not uncommon for xe's o have one end on 0.25. not quite sure what that means but im sure when i measure them it'll all become clear. ive just gotta sweet-talk my boss now to let me keep the car at work so i can work on it at the weekends

wats the rattle? piston slap or crank bearings?

its more likely to be piston slap which can easily be resolved with an overbore and some forged pistons.

its from the bottom end and bearing noise, i personally think its to do with oil presure but im waitin on my gauge to arrive. when its warm it doesnt rattle, and when its cold as soon as it goes over 3000rpm it stops rattling also, yet when i plugged in the oil presure gauge at work it was running a 2.1bar.

the bores where fine before rebuild. not ovalised and where rehoned then fitted with new rings

sounds like the exact symptoms of piston slap.

its from the bottom end:

rattling from the bottom end is often piston slap caused by too much piston skirt to bore clearance, makes the piston rattle around in the bore rater than running true.

when its warm it doesnt rattle:

when the engine warms up the pistons and piston rings expand and the gap is taken up slightly so that the piston no longer 'slaps' the bores during its stroke

and when its cold as soon as it goes over 3000rpm it stops rattling:

increased piston speed gives the piston less time to rock in the bores as there is more power pushing the piston through its stroke so it has less time to rattle in the bores.

the bores where fine before rebuild. not ovalised and where rehoned then fitted with new rings:

if the block had been re-honed before then another rehone could cause the piston to be too small to fill the cylinder, fitting oversized rings without oversized pistons will often cause piston slap.
