Benny.. simply put:
Imagine a highlift cam, and imagine a 'normal' cam..
VTEC engines have two sets of lobes, meaning that when 'vtec' kicks in, the car swaps from the 'normal' cams to very high lift cams..
The 'normal' cams mean that at low revs you still get 'standard' 2.0 power, but when you get to the changeover, you switch to the highlift ones..
Highlift cams at low revs produce LESS power than the standard ones, so the swap occurs when the power produced by the 'high lift' cam becomes more than the 'normal' cam..
The cams in the VTEC 'highlift' are VERY high lift, meaning that if they just used the high cam, the idle would be crap, low end power would be crap etc..

the I-VTEC produces a falt curve of around 130lb ft from around 2000ish-5500rpm when it drops slightly before the VTEC comes in. this produces a gain to around 144lb ft which then drops off. hp comes from using high revs. the CTR requires a very short ratio box to make the most of its weak powerband.

I hear Schumachers going to drop in a 2.5TD as it gives him 'torque'.. he's pissed off with having to 'rev the tits' off his motor..

thats still shit torque though. and if you engine only generates all that power at high revs then it does tend to prove the fact that you have to rag the t*ts off the engine to get the (undeniable) best of it...
that and shave aboot 500kg off the weight of a CTR

You've never driven a VTEC benny?
Its doenst feel like you are thrashing it when you rev it, as the car was designed to rev..
Think of a motorbike, you dont think shit, im thrashing this, just cos you have to rev it past 5k, when Vauxhall engines tend to get a bit thrashy..

The only time i notice it drags is when u pull off in the wrong gear, say turn a big bend in 3rd instead of 2nd an then yeah, it takes a few secs xtra 2 move off

nope mate, I havent....just trying to get a feel for it thats all.
A more simple question would be...if you are (say) at redline in third, and change up....would you get back into the lower cam range??? or stay in vtec mode...

When getting on, you always stay in VTEC between changes..
For example my Integra revs to 8400 red line, but when you change it drops to approx 6-6.5 (VTEC is at 5600)
So yes you do stay in VTEC

and how heavy is the Clio? and how big is the clio's engine..
If I had a CRVtec (2.0 bottom end with B16 or b18c5 head) then I would be in the 13's
