place i work they never recommend putting neons in a new tank, they try and make it as easy and problem free at first by just putting 5 harlequins in and nothing else for a week or 2...
i know people do put neons in as first fish, but its a 50/50 thing

neons are sometimes abit too delicate to go in a new tank and as russ has found out they sometimes don't make it
like i say people do it and have no problems, but its abit risky.
whereas harlequins are good hardy fish and we will always recommend them even if the buyers dont like them... better off getting the tank going with something your not too keen on rather than putting something nice in that maybe wont make it

Tetras do nip yeh, ok yes they do look good in big mother fucker shoals but i wouldnt have them again
Yeh your dad could build a tank as long as the glass was thick enough and he used the proper sealant, and had a lid with room for a light fitting

I would say Plattys, get x2 plattys and they will cycle your tank well..
If you go into your local fish shop and tell them you put fish in to help cycle they all died then they wont be too pleased!

you have to establish the bacterial colonies in your tank that will turn the harmful nitrates into nitrites (think thats the right way round).I usually takes about 2 weeks but each case is different.
