Z18XE's over here with induction sorted, decent high flow extractor, exhaust, and a remap has seen just shy of 150-160bhp at the fly. they respond very well to breathing mods, and has been seen previously, they are bloody strong engines. they can handle a lot of power without too much engine strengthening

The problem I see with the turbo engine is front end weight, big downside. Add to this the cooling issues with having a red hot lump of metal under ur hood and its a big no-no for constant track use IMO. Lots more to go wrong with turbo engines due to the fact that there are more components. Simpler solutions are nearly always better.
I would recommend a 1.8 small block N/A. 170 bhp should be easily achievable without any negative weight issues, and trust me 170 bhp is plenty for some serious track fun
Also, why is torque such a big issue for u? If the car is prepped for track use (low weight) then torque isn't really an issue

I was impressed with dar's car, but I still believe that a 2.0 is a backwards initial step. I agree that they can handle but you put yourself at a disadvantage by placing extra weight over the nose.
IMO torque is required for towing caravans, for heavy cars and for comfortable road driving. For a track car that spends its life 1rpm shy of the limiter torque isn't really that important (correct me if i'm wrong!). My nova puts out a feable 119lbft of torque and is more than a bit nippy.

if it was a heavy car, skyboat, supra etc then yeah
but small and light i would go for small revy engine that you can keep up in the power band

Yeah thats totally correct.
Bike engines don't produce torque, but wne it only weighs 160kg and revs to 16,000rpm, who needs torque

I want torque
I dont want to spend serious cash to only give myself a 3lb advantage, i agree a small revving smallblock is a good idea, but if i can extract some torque with it then im sure it will make for an entertaining drive.

Another vote here for the 1.8 small block. Its the way foward no need to spend money on new mounts driveshafts and all that just throw it in with some TB's of course.
I think its a faily well tried tested way

Would the Z18XE really need throttle bodies? I'm not familiar with this engine, but surely just working the head, cams, exhaust, a mantzel/lexmaul inlet type thing (if it has a bad inlet?!), bottom end bolts and a re-map would see circa 160-170bhp
All the above is based on guestimate so don't hold me to it!

It's a torquey engine too, far, far more then the 1.6.

hi there Teddy...im from South Africa..have a corsa B and fitted a x18xe1..havent opened the motor yet for any mods...have branches, bmc filter,and free flow...the car is amazing...i think this motor is highly underated but has loads of potential...will be doing some mods in the new year...good luck with your decision...cheers
