Exhaust can increase boost, even with OB it could still be knocking. You're trying to get as close to 102 octane don't forget. Do you have a knock sensor?

Nope.
99 RON fuel with the booster which is apparently supposed to give 5-6 ROn increase

Thats a big increase! I've used Millers when dragging which claims 1 octane rating!

Nitrous Formula NF Octane Booster is a Race Strength Octane Booster.
NF Race will increase the octane level by as much as 60 pts or 6 ron at full strength which is 5mls per litre of fuel.

It would be a bit hard for them to say what's wrong though when they haven't seen the car

I'd need them to say they will take the car in, and then get it towed by RAC the 1/2 mile they are away. Otherwise its gonna have to stay bumped up the kerb

I used to run 99 and NF octane booster to give about 102RON.
Sounds to me like bottom end to be honest, its always on piston 3 too!!! The hottest piston cos its next to the turbo and the last to be fed with fuel aswell so it always runs the leanest!

no joy mate but i wouldnt just say you were an unlucky 1,hope it all gets sorted for you
my mates 98 reg one is now on its second rebuild and needs to go back in again as its still not right which is a shame as its a nice car
he rebuilt it the first time and sorted the problem but it went again as he didnt run it in right, then got kilmarnock engine services to rebuild it and something has went again but they are blameing the company that supplied parts to them as something has fucked again (something to do with crankshaft but cant remember what)

Andy...
some 2.5 info
from Andy Forrest
http://www.andyforrestperformance.co.uk/26911.html
Engine Internals
If treated correctly a Subaru engine is a very reliable unit. Up to 400bhp is achievable on standard internals on any year of car regardless of STI, WRX or UK. It is however, wise to consider the mileage and previous use the engine has had before planning to tune to this level.
Uprated pistons, rods, bearings and gaskets should be considered if higher power and/or track use is intended. This would cost in the region of £1.5K for parts plus the labour costs.
For a similar sum you can buy a brand new 2.5 litre complete short engine (block, crank, rods, pistons and bearings). This 2.5 is the short engine fitted to the USA spec STI from 2004. In standard form this short engine has proven itself capable of sustaining over 400bhp. For outputs from 400-500bhp we do however recommend upgrading the std piston to forged units, this typically adds £5-600
All the parts from the original 2 litre i.e. heads, cams, intake exhaust, sump etc can be reused.
The 2.5 conversion with a mid sized turbo such as the AFP5/20 makes an incredibly fast car with excellent throttle response.
