As for this:

tried to turn car on last night - for some reason its buggering up.
I dont know whether there's an air leak, the spark plugs are soggy or what but its really bad.
Taking it to a diagnostics garage tomorrow to see what they think - time to spend more money
...surely you have some sort of warranty offered from Vsport?
*edit* That engine sounds like its dropped a valve to me(very hard to tell from a phone video though)
[Edited on 03-12-2007 by DaveB]
yeh thats what im thinking but its a long way away
hopefully its just the distributor - getting a newun on today and some leads so fingers crossed.

I'd personally do a compression test before you run the car again. if it is something terminal then it's only going to make things worse.
I'm thinking back to a video I had of my old astra when it dropped a valve, that was also taken on my phone, and unfortunately it sounded the same as yours does

I very much doubt it has 'dropped a valve' as that would be far more obvious than a missfire.

well is at a mates who has diagnostics equipment at the mo.
We're replacing the dizzy/coil/leads and plugs to see what happens if no fault codes come up.
Then im afraid its probs back to you at Vsport dave

indeed
theres no nasty sounds coming from the engine tbf. It's just not running.
Making me think its something like crank sensor, or to do with HT or induction

IMO, thats much worse than a simple misfire.
A 1cyl misfire, the engine still runs and you can drive it just about.
If its not something like the dizzy or coil(meaning 2/3 cyls aren't firing or something), it may be mechanical. Hopefully not.

nah when you get it driving its fine im pretty sure its electrical/non mechanical at the mo

Does it sound the same on the vid, as in real life?
In the vid it sounds much worse than simple ignition misfires ive heard.

on the vid it sounds a bit metallic aswell as deep i think. I dont know how your interpereting it you seee as you havnt heard it in real life.
In real life there's no clangs tings or anything. It just sounds how it would when it was running. Is quite deep now due to the 264 cams and the higher part is probably the misfire's coming through the exhaust - like a semi pop if you get me.
Probs sounds worse as its in me garage which obviously echoes.

reet.
went round to marks and i replaced the coil, leads and distibutor/rotor arm and the car runs fine!
the only niggle is that on over-rev, when i put my foot back down, it shudders/hesistates before setting off again.
We're putting more expensive plugs in as these are REALLY dirty from when itsbeen running crap to see if it sorts it
any other ideas?

have now replaced the crank sensor, ICV and cleaned the AFM and its quite a bit smoother on start-up, but still not running right when cold.
Really annoying now

Could be coolant sensor playing up if its when cold. Also have you checked the ignition timing?

yeh ive changed the ecu temp sensor - pretty sure its the same as the coolant temp sensor?
Ignition timing would do it all the way through rev range though. is fine going up the revs....

failed MOT on emissions, horn and indicators.
horns already fixed, wiring up some indicators onto wing mirrors and then getting new afm/icv still to sort emissions (hopefully)
that is all for today

lambda came today am fitting it in the next hour and fingers crossed my emissions will be ok. if not i think we're going to mess with the timing see if it gets it down for the mot, then re-align it for after.

is all fitted has made no real difference.
only thiing i could think of would be the cams making it overfuel way too much on standard timing?

Right.
We've sorted out the starting (fingers crossed when we start it tomorrow!)
Somehow the sensors had been wired up wrong and so effectively were the wrong way even when right when you get me - dont know how that happened but hey!
Found that lifter number 4 is sticking/ has no pressure at all, so we've run the engine with number 4 plug out to get the pressure up and can run it fine, just depends if it loses its pressure again.
think dave will be sending me a new set to fit. Just pissing me off as its covered buggar all miles, but hey will be worth it.
Also ordering some vernier pulleys to sort out flat spots im getting (unless thats the lifter)
either way - a souple of weeks and it should be perfeck. at least ive been able to take it for a rag, and screw the running in, i blasted it

just a quick update,
Just ordered a new ashley system for the nova as mine's died.
Also needs new lifters on one side of cylinder 3 (cant remember which though) as it has a majorly bad misfire because of them when cold and low oil pressure when first started.
That is all. New exhaust should be fitted Thursday, then its off to the racing line for the lifters/head check and verniers.
Hopefully it'l be running fine soon!
