BTW thats not a dig at you Martin, but more at your tutors. If they don't know that ally and steel expand at different rates, and they tell you headgaskets should be replaced at a major service, they shouldn't be teaching IMO.

when i asked a mechanic to change the brakes on my corsa to 2.0l ones ( i had all the bits) he said "we can only change bits on a car to things it came with standard"

went down the road to another garage, payed £50 to do it.

kwik fit tired to charge me £150 for changing the backbox, and a new centre section ( i was supplying backbox)

I'm not a mechanic and could have told you heating it up would have helped

How could you, I had a two tutors that didn't know that and they've both been in the buisness 20 years, but the one that worked at Vauxhall in the past knew. Tutor Clive is always right.

to be fair is basic physics principle.......heating it would have made sense to me! you ever run hot water over bottle lid to help release it?

I guess as the one that knew, my tutor Clive didn't tell me til end of the day as he said it's teaching me a lesson but he's in the Body and Paint buisness not a mechanic.

I remember one thing with Riverside Vauxhall in Bedford, I had a problem with my left rear light, I even changed the holder and it didn't work, but I asked Vauxhall for help and they said it would cost £47 for a 30 min diagnosis, and then £97 for every hour was spent on my car. Rip off or what, don't know how much it would be now as that was abot 6 months ago now.

I'd like to see alot of people on here deal with customers to be fair. Most garages don't like fitting aftermarket parts as it usually brings hassle, people like to try and diagnose on the internet first.

There are alot of rip off merchants out there but not all garages are con artists.

And another time that Arnold Clark had it for a week my sister phoned me and said it was in Burger King car park.
I went down pretending i wanted something out of my boot. The receptionist was all helpful and then came back looking worried with the manager, He said 'Someone will bring it round in 5 minutes'. Waited 10 minutes and saw it drive past the showrrom window. I ran round and saw 3 guys my age get out with there burger kings. I went off my head , the manager came out and went mental at them aswell. Got a full tank of fuel, an extra years warranty and 2 free services. Hate to think they were probably kicking fuck out of my car.

what did they do with the bmc?

bet the manager was licking your arse a treat

When I had my EGR problem on my GSI, my local Vauxhall garage replaced it 4 times and when the codes still wouldn't go, they said that some parts of the valve had come loose in the pipe and got stuck in my manifold and that's why the light was coming on and if I wanted a new manifold it would be £520 plus labour.

Haha yeh right mate.

2 mates of mine who are mechanics talking about induction kits, one says "it adds about 10bhp to the 1.0 12v engine cos it gets more air in" and the other saying "air filter lets air out of the engine mate"

had an engine management light come on mine after about 1 year of owing. still under warranty so sent it in. evry time i accelerated over 40 or got over 60rpm the car would shudder and go no faster

took it to a mate who recently quit wrking for vx and he said, yeah, seen this b4 its a coil pack needs replacing. sent it into VX and expected a quick job. got a phone call 10 minutes after leaving saying they wouldnt touch the car with the coiliovers on. dad came down and threatend to take it somewere else.they repaired it.

got it back. still not right, went straight back majorly pissed off and they said some bullshit about the part must have been faulty????? basically admitting they put a faulty part in the car.

sent back in and rang back...........yes sir weve found the problem, your crank shaft has snapped in half. now im no mechanic but if your crank shaft snapped in half the car would drive like a washing machine full of bricks???? arseholes

when i used to get parts for my old xe corsa on R1 carbs in Vauxhall they were so thick.

Went in for a rocker cover gasket and 2 bolts for engine.

me: asked for them for an xe
vaux: Can i have the reg

Me: Its not the standard engine in teh car
Vaux: But i need to know the reg for the parts

Me: On the reg is P..........
Vaux: So its a 1.2 8v

Me: No its a 2.0 16v
Vaux: They didnt make corsas with that engine

Me: I know, its from a mk2 astra gte
Vaux: Ahh i cant supply the parts then

Me: Why???
Vaux: Because i need the reg for the parts to come up on my screen

Me: ok, left and found a mk2 gte on internet and rang up, gave reg and got parts, There so feckin stupid.

For mechanical was told i needed my cam belt done and my car didnt have a cambelt, they said everycar has one. gave up and took car else where.

Reason why i do most of my mechanics now myself

end of the day its like chinse wispers, by the time it gets to the receptionist they change the story/dont actualy no whats been done and just spill aload of ramadom crap

plus some of them just dont have a clue, you have to spend half an hour explaining to them what you have done,

and some parts people are just useless! they dont have a clue, and can never find stuff!!!

our top parts man on the service side just knows hundreds of part number, never needs a book/pc is amazing

A bit like when I worked at Argos, there was a guy that knew every product, its catalogue number and where it was in the warehouse. Skills
