Whenever ive seen e30 or e36 m3s on track they always seem really capable even with minimal mods, id definately be considering one.

although the e36 isnt quite as sharp as the e46 you will save alot of weight once you strip the e36 as everything is electric just leaving you with a very capable 280bhp rwd m3

Over all the cars listed id say an M3.They sound awesome,go well and will probably last longer(without breaking) than all the others. And imo they look better.Im just not a big scooby fan.
Or how about a stripped out Pulsar with 300+bhp and a Quaiffe box??

Adam - There would need a to a lot of spending on a std M3/Impreza to make it decent... but some of those pre-prepped track cars do seem a bargain once you take into account the sum of its parts.
I split my (your) white corsa for about 5k... I think i had it for sale, complete and working for 4k and no one was interested

Just how good are the 1.9 205 gtis for a track car?
We're having the same dilemma but with up to 1k to spend. Either a 205 or a cheap corsa c20xe. Thinking the 205 will handle better from the start!

ps.... there isnt that much wrong with our current R32 shell. I'd just prefer to start from bare shell, with full weld in cage. Makes weight saving much simpler.
We have some wee rust bits, but nothing major. Some cosmetic track scars are ok with me.

I would be looking at a 1995 ish e36 m3 and spend a little on getting a set of nice wide MV2's on it. Do the rest like dtiching the interior your self if you are on a tight budget!
But i would also look at a early impreza sti or something around the 3k mark and spend the rest on mapping the engine to run properply on 'our fuel' as no one does this hence why half of them dont last. Also you can mess around with rims, tyres, brakes etc!
I am under the impression you dont want a little hatch hence the above.
Just thinkg though! What about a cheap cheap car (not quick tho compaired to skyline) MK3 golf VR6.
Would have bags of cash left over aswell to do what ever to it. Make a mental noise aswell!

I'd deffo stick with a NA engine. More reliable for constent thrashings on track.
I just dont trust turbos enough after 5-10 laps of hard abuse So much more to go wrong (but then again, not like you had luck with NA lumps ).
I'd actually look at a BMW 325 3 door. Sure not as much power as an M3, but parts must be cheaper.
E30 325i Light, RWD, strong engines, 190bhp (think?), lots of handling upgrade abilities.
Too many aids and techno gubbins and "power shift diffs etc.." to be raw enough for me (i.e Scoobys, Evo's etc..).
Track car, keep it simple, light.

a skyline / impreza doesn’t drive itself on track.... contrary to popular belief
A turbo is fine after hard laps.... its the oil temp that worries me... but thats the same worry as an NA.
