most cameras have, center weighted, evaluative and something else cant remember the name of it but i think its what the camera uses to expose the image right so say you take a picture of a person with sky behind them center weighted will expose the person and blow the sky out, evaluative will expose it all or try to.

spot metering means you can chose your self where you want it to expose so you can purposly tell it to expose the sky then fill in the person with flash

(probably should of u2u'd that )

the above info may not be correct its just my understanding of it
