in what model have you driven them joe, agreed in a A6 dont find them that good, but in a A5, espically when i managed to complete the audi treasure hunt round mk in one in record time, i thought it was epic

A4 and A5. It does seem better in the A5 to be fair so duno if its a bit more powerful but I'd never call it fast.

Don't get me wrong, if I was getting an A5/A6 I'd get the diesel as the petrols are pretty wet unless its a V8 or SC V6 but I wouldn't buy it as a 'fast' car.

THIS
Nail. Head
The only reasons diesels exist is for economy, yes they can be made "fast" but the general charecteristics behaviour and the noise/feel are not what you want in or anywhere near a "performance" car.
The same people who can't figure that out are the same people who buy BMW 330's as they are "just as quick" as an M3 on paper. without realising its like comparing a cunt to an arsehole. Both good, ones tighter and more special

I think what it is with derv's is that bit of fun/ thrill of a loud high revving engine is missing.
meaning most people strike them out as its not what they are used to. One thing I really want to drive is a 335d, having driven the petrol model which I found very quick I wonder how the diesel compares especially mid range

Modern diesels are deceptive!
ALL diesels are deceptive, but modern diesels actually rev higher than older ones.
You ever driven a Pug 106 Graduate Diesel? Nothing deceptive about that
The only diesel I've driven is a clio 1.5td and it was shit, I really don't like diesels AT ALL!!!

Driving a clio diesel then saying all diesels are shit is like me giving a 330ci beans the other night and deciding that all bmw's are shit.
So fair enough.

Sounds like a great idea
Coming from someone who drives a Clio Sport, power band of 5-7k rpm.
The 1.9 CDTi boxed in an Astra will keep with a standard Astra VXR 40-90, not bad considering the VXR would be getting around 25mpg whilst the diesel double that.
Also, when do you ever come across some chav wanting to 'show you up' from a standing start, never, your always on the move 30mph+, which means they dont stand a chance.
Would love to drive one in a corsa.

Astra would have a chance against a chav in a 182 from a standing start tbh.

i dont thik people that drive astra vxrs will care much for mpg tbh .. and 'box' the vxr and see if the diesel will keep up then.

Read the rest of the thread you twit I drive diesels day in day out
The whole point of this thread is discuss the merits of putting a diesel in a car to acheive performance. Now as much as I appreciate how quick diesels are now days if I wanted a specific performance car I wouldnt not even entertain a diesel. keeping someone on the boil between 2-3.5k is not was i call fun which is what its about at the end of the day right?
Plus my Clio pulls all the way through the rev range till 7.7k thank you Dunno what that had to do with this thread though

what about if the journey was 500 miles and there was a bomb attached to the car that meant if you stopped before the destination it blew up? the diesel with its mpg would win then.

Yeah I take that all back.....but you'd only be prolonging death by driving a boring car?

or perhaps death from being bored in the diesel causing a crash.
its a fact actually that more diesel cars are involved in accidents than petrol cars. a genuine fact.
