Former England captain Alan Shearer: "Fabio Capello said some months ago that, to make it into his World Cup squad, players would have to be in form and playing regularly for for their clubs. Joe Cole and Emile Heskey are not, but I can understand why he has picked them because he has gone for tried and trusted players in his squad. What are our prospects? We've got a decent chance. Any team who wins this World Cup will need a bit of luck - England will need a little bit more. But if decisions go our way, and we keep our main XI fit, then we will have a decent chance."

TBH I can see why he'd take the risk on Cole, as on his day he is head and shoulders above the over wingers in that squad.
Heskey however...

I'd go with same team as Cosmo but with Hart in goal
Heskey is in because Rooney's last 10 games with Heskey alongside have brought 9 goals, his last 10 without have brought 2
Very surprised by the walcott exlcusion, although im not hugely arsed but i think hes a great impact sub - much better than SWP IMO
Surprised by Warnock being included also, onoly in that he didnt feature at all

Is Walcott really a good impact sub though?
Ok, he has his pace which defenders won't like after 70 mins of SWP/Lennon but then that is all Walcott has to offer. His end ball is appalling. He has potential to be an impact sub but on current form is no where near that.

I liked TV's idea of naming the squad well in advance to calm anxiety etc. and let them really plan tactics

Can someone explain why Carrick is in the squad? Hes been useless all season, the reasoning behind Heskey I can understand but I wouldn't have left Walcott at home and Carrick going, Carrick is horseshit.

IMO Barry shouldn't have gone. He's not fit enough to train until after USA game. He'll not be match fit etc.

Wonder if Carrick will have a blinder of a WC following all the negativity?
(Probably not! )

Poorest England squad in a number of World Cups I think.
Looking at Brazil they're exactly the same as well.

I think Beckham, Hargreaves, and (a fit) Owen are going to be a great loss. Even Sol can be a rock at the back

You say that but didnt we have the best qualifying campaign we have ever had?
Still i am disappointed at the inclusion of Heskey and SWP. SWP is not the game changing, impact sub we need. Walcott can be, likewise Johnson.
Ah well so long as we finish 2nd in the group im happy

I'm happy with it. Maybe wouldve swapped SWP for Johnson and Heskey for any other English striker in the world.

My starting 11:
James
Johnson Ferdinand Terry Cole
Milner Gerrard Barry Cole
Heskey Rooney
Then Crouch can come on for Heskey.
