Specialized are good value for money. Wouldn't say any one brand is the best.
All my bikes are different brands. I just buy which ever bike is best for the money I've got to spend and for what style of riding its intended for.
My Trek won Mountain Bike of the Year 2010 and always get really good reviews in the magazines finishing above the equivalent Specialized bike.

can anyone reccomend somewhere online as im looking at getting a bike soon for some normal / off road riding but nothing too extreme. Nowhere really specialises in bikes near me

Theres an edinburgh cycles in Aberdeen so il have a look there sometime

Make sure your bike is the right size. Ignore to a extent the seat tube size (every bike is pretty much measured on this!) and pick it off the top tube/actual top tube size. If you are not sure of your fit then use this fit calculator as a loose guide line:

I used to have a carrera fury, the 2005 one. Was a good bike 
Still use it to go to work and the shops on as I dont like to leave the scott locked up alone

its for the brake mount, it so when the rear end compresses the caliper stays in the same position
